My thought is that one post per week, seems like a blog platform rather than a social app. Social media is too vague. Maybe you could remove the concept of being a social media, but a diary sharing platform. Define the task as to share a weekly diary among friends, it could gives more commitment for people to write.

To be honest, your reaction is so dramatic and I am not sure is it something personal.

But I could agree with you on this point. A average person literally knows the like 4-5 tasks they need to do on their computer and they don’t want to know or learn anything else. That's true.

Modern software, be it Windows, Mac OS, or you productivity tool is going to ruin your workflow by introducing non-reversible UI changes that sure no purpose other than telling the world that our product is not staling. That's the standard practice.

While I am using Linux desktop, with customized config that is not changed for years, and I don't need to learn a new workflow for these years anymore. That's good and I like it because I am getting old.

Project Treble is an effort to separate driver and Linux kernel. And later Android added mechanism to upgrade kernel from play service. I guess Google is resourceful enough to hedging on different approach to solve a similar problem.

However, the crux of the problem is the Android manufacturer. You can't solve a human and incentive problem with a technical solution. Project Treble makes manufacturer easier to support their device, but they still don't motivate to do it. Google needs a tighter control on what device manufacturer should release.

Android One is a good approach, only qualify certain devices to be include for meeting certain criteria. They could actually create a watermark on unsecured device for not updating Android version, just like chromium do it to website not using https. I think this is more effective than creating a new OS just to let the manufacturer being lazy.

Maybe a dumb question, but I am not sure what is evidence-based online interventions. Maybe an example would help me to understand.

And maybe you could open up your API documentation not behind a registration. I understand you are operating a non profit, and signup is free, but somebody like me does not have a social platform that needs this integration right now, don't like to pretend to be a customer/user in order to read a doc. Maybe after seeing the doc, I can have some idea what is the capabilities and can be used on future project.

Anyway, I like your intent working on helping vulnerable.

Having Japanese language versions is a deal breaker for me for learning Japanese. There is amazon.jp, but it is not Netflix like service, kindle "unlimited" is pretty limited on what content is available.

Though I understand it is common practice for Japanese publisher to have region lock on Japanese version and ban international buyer to buy without obvious reason. Looking forward to see what you could do on this space. Wish you luck.

There are different kind of charter cities. Concessions in Shanghai you mentioned was ran by the colonist and work for the colonist. The locals were either rejected or not interested in participating. That was the problem.

Hong Kong was successful because it was ran by local Hongkongers. It began as much as like other colony. But Hong Kong become successful because it was cut out of the the colonist UK's control after WW2. It was a territory in the middle of a communist. The governor need local support in order to sustain their power. So they starts to adapt locals into the power structure. At the end, local Hongkongers were highly participating the society. But it become catastrophic in last two years because the new host country China does not like that.

In that sense, I agreed that charter city did not work, because a successful charter city will be doomed to destroy by the host country. It could either become a country or being absorbed. A colonist style charter city were problematic to start with.

But it is a good method to test new governing idea before a full adaptation to the whole country. It is like startup for government. In that sense, it is a good idea, and Hong Kong was a great experiment. China created Shenzhen based on that.

That makes the impression that Airbnb is always out of service, and the other platform selling Airbnb rent is more available. It creates a competitor and worsen the service of Airbnb at the same time.

I rarely need to do that, so I cannot find an example for the moment. It is usually a one-off thing, then yes I could do the conversion manually, but it was obviously an usability degraded.

Of course, it is not about the fatality. It is an example to point out that a rarely used feature does not mean it is not important.

Another example is Google search remove the ability to perform exact text search such as "some phrase I found important to search". Maybe based on statistic, it was 20% of user using that, 80% of users does not rely on this feature. The logic is saying messing up 20% of user is not a problem. We are serving the 80% of users pretty great.

The current paradigm of UX design for providing "good default" to serve 80% of users and removing customization to screw 20% of advanced user makes me pretty helpless for using modern app. That's why I prefer cli nowadays for the flexibility of those software.

I seldom use this feature, but when I do and I can't find the encoding menu, then it will be a very frustrating experience. Their logic seems to be like dialing emergency service is a rarely use feature based on telemetry, so we will just remove that. No discussion is allowed, if you challenged, then they ask you about do you have data about the use case of dialing emergency service? People can still send text to emergency service, it is fine.

And because of this post, I just checked if chromium supported encoding menu. Yep, they removed it long ago. Basically, when you need to read some very old Japanese site where their encoding is pretty non standard, you are screwed.
