You can't change an asshole but you need to be more asshole to an asshole in order to inspire respect among peers and people around you. In my career before i get promoted i was already a go to guy among my peers because people knew i don't expect sympathy from an asshole and push their ideas if i see merit in it.
The relation b/w Respect and competence is correct. I had started on wrong foot with competent people and when they tried to demonstrate their competence, I show off my skills as a competition, but surprisingly it turns out in to mutual self respect and we get along well. I have been on both sides as showing the competence and being challenged and it always amazes me how it always turns in to mutual respect.

Employers don't have other option. What happens is the people who love coding don't want to be managers and the people who want don't want to code or suck at coding take up manager positions. The problem arises when these managers have to promote. They choose the lesser capable guy who is not a threat to their job. This is what i have seen in software industry.
Be very good than most team members in your tech skills and demonstrate it when chance presents, that will make them respect your judgement. If your tech skills are not on par with some of the team members that's fine, but you need to handle them differently. Time and time again i have seen skilled members of the team will question authority if they don't get along with team leads. Remember the cost of replacing a manager or techlead is low compared to skilled people because they get paid lower usually. You may have to delegate work but you must be the most skilled guy in the team or you should have a very likable personality.
This may be good for long term business deals but not optimal for software engineers salary negotiations. Considering the pace of job change, its optimal to take the hard negotiations.
