I was born/raised in a poor-ish place in south asia and you are generally trained by your parents to believe that most of the homeless/panhandlers are 'fakers'. This myth was quickly destroyed once I spoke to like 5 of them including some people that worked for me who panhandled in their free time (even when they had a job!). They would quickly lay the math out for you and it becomes clear very quickly that these folks don't do this by choice.
I think the faker argument is simply a story richer folks tell to themselves and their kids to prevent major cognitive dissonance since otherwise how can you justify the INSANE amount of homeless/panhandlers there? Branding these folks as the out-group makes it easy to turn a blind eye. No-one chooses to live 10x worse than the general population, beg and be looked down upon.
This is amazing! Takes serious guts to open up a car like that! Of course there's lots of questions like how did you recalibrate the radars later on? And also how did you get hold of that new firmware to flash?
IANAL but dont think so - otherwise all self driving car companies would be illegal :) I would imagine this doesn't make it anymore illegal than modifying your tires/suspension/ECU does. It most likely voids your manufacturer warranty while this thing is hooked up.
My father was a builder (albeit in a different country) but affordable housing (or standardized apartments) are actually a builder favorite. They are quick to turn around, no architects involved and require smaller capital outlays/financing. Sure he might make less but it's easier money. As long as some one is paying I think the free market will build it.
This is so so incredibly sad. I see people on this thread saying stuff like "this is how life is" and "suck it up and move" but the core of the problem is that we have literally institutionalized slavery by calling it a market force. This woman isn't a market operator, shes basically a modern day slave. Crucial to the functioning of the system (or Facebook doesn't have food) but somehow also expendable. This is not just a American but a worldwide issue. Whatever the market forces are it just doesn't make any sense that a cook is unable to make a living.
As a brown immigrant with family living in places like Dallas, Houston and st Louis I vouch for this. Even though I'm filthy rich compared to the poor woman the article talks about even I could instantly increase my quality of life by moving to st. Louis. I would consider this a huge downgrade from the bay area primarily since it's simply unsafe and hostile for someone with my "color". My family members who grew up in the Midwest grow up living in lowkey constant fear. So yeah moving might be a terrible downgrade for many non whites.
Do these people not understand that what they are basically saying is "a few children must be sacrificed so that local governments wake up". Also this assumes that the local governments have enough resources (or ever will) which may totally not be the case.
Am curious how the profitability part is calculated. Seems like annuity payments or interest/payback on the loan is ignored? If these chains were profitable after counting in debt, there would be no debt - right?

Yup - we are actually using webRTC under the covers for video/audio RTP and webRTC itself uses Opus (or recommends) so we'll probably be switching to that for audio chat when we go that route. Thanks!
I'm a co-founder/dev at PowWow. VoiceChat is going to be in the next major release. We already have system audio being ogg/vorbis'ed to you so its not a question of expertise but simply time allocation. I completely agree that whenever we have PowWow'ed, we would have a active skype session since that's much easier than chat. That's also what a alpha release is supposed to be - to gather your inputs! So if everyone agrees that Voice chat is a must have it'll definitely be there in the general release!
