I wonder if people are unaware that Hezbollah and Israel have been shooting rockets at each other for months. There are roughly 1000 deaths in the conflict and hundreds of thousands of civilians evacuated. If we’re talking about harms to civilians, this incident is probably small compared to the war overall.
If we go with the logic of the grandparent comment, where were can measure the harm by adding up a minute of time wasted across millions of people to get a big amortized number, it seems commensurate that each of those people can be compensated for their minute of wasted time with a few dollars.
“Trickle down” isn’t necessarily a good mental model here. Maybe the high achieving types from across the country and world are increasingly concentrating their attention into admission to a few top universities. So the max effort expended by the top students may be increasing, but the median effort could be unchanged or dropping.
What do you figure is the real motivation for SpaceX if not Mars? I think it’s a much worse business than Tesla if you don’t care about the SpaceX mission. Seems to be barely viable financially, while Tesla has healthy margins. Musk has used his Tesla wealth to support SpaceX, which makes him seem more like a believer to me.
I asked it to write a synopsis of a satisfying version of the final episode of the TV show, and the result was passable (but not inspired). It could be the average of all fanfic/discussion on the topic.
Personally I enjoy being having the sun up after work. My fitness and general happiness immediately improves when daylight saving starts and drops when it ends. For me the year has eight good months and four shitty months. After this change it’ll be more like ten good months and two mediocre months. Those additional hours of time when I can enjoy the world really do mean a lot to me.
I understand that there are other people with lifestyles that benefit more from sun in the morning, and they aren’t wrong, they are just different.
Apple is also selling app install ads in the News and Stocks apps. Tens of billions of dollars are spent on app install ads on iOS each year, so this is a very lucrative market for Apple if they can corner it (and probably necessary if they are going to achieve expected Services revenue growth in the years to come). It remains to be seen whether they’ll take another crack at the rest of the ad market, after the failure of iAd. They seem to be laying the groundwork for it.
If you set brand image aside and just think about the huge amounts of money at stake, it becomes obvious that the whole app tracking transparency thing is just Apple taking over the ad market on iOS. They invented the term “cross app tracking” and defined it to not include their own conversion tracking through their various apps to purchases of their advertisers’ products via Apple Pay. Then they forced their ad-sales competitors to send all their conversion data to Apple, while providing separate APIs with richer data to their own advertisers.

IMO this is the worst thing about Obj C. The number of times I’ve discovered code that was silently failing in some Obj C project.....
