I was one of those people for years, and then discovered rock climbing was what centered me and brought things into perspective. It's easy to obsess about things that don't take you out of your comfort zone, but once you experience more and more outside of your comfort, you realize that there are a lot more things that are worth your attention (or not). I think he's got the right idea, putting himself into a situation that, while for him may be somewhat familiar, could go either very right or very wrong.
I know someone who does web development internally at Wells Fargo. It's surprising how much stuff is exactly like this with the sole intent of making the user feel more secure and/or high-tech.

Top apps aren't necessarily top because they're technically impressive or have good code design, but because they provide a function/service that many people want. If a child can think of something like that, even if it's something simple, then it could absolutely become a top app.
I disagree (that it's a branding and advertising problem alone), and here's a very simple reason why.
I went into a store and saw a machine running Windows 8. I decided to give it a try despite all the bad things I had heard about it. I opened the calendar app, messed around, said "neat!" to myself, and went to close the program. Wait, there's no close button. Okay, maybe if I hover around the corners there will be a pop-out to click it. No? Okay, maybe if I hover around the edges of the screen in general there will be a pop-out. No? Okay, well I can always hit Alt-F4... that didn't work, they must have it locked down. I have no idea how to close the calendar application.
I've been programming for the past 12 years, and I have no idea how to close this application. What has my life become?
Doesn't look like Google Maps explicitly prohibits comparing data. Closest would be
>(f) use the Service or Content with any products, systems, or applications for or in connection with (i) real time navigation or route guidance, including but not limited to turn-by-turn route guidance that is synchronized to the position of a user's sensor-enabled device; or (ii) any systems or functions for automatic or autonomous control of vehicle behavior;
and comparing results from a separate service doesn't really fall under that, in my mind.
I fought with 10 minutes of errors before getting to the checkout screen, and upon hitting submit, got another error. Cart was empty and it was back to "notify me." Got an email an hour later saying my order went through. Stressful.
This will give me a reason to actually go to Radioshack now. The convenience of being able to just grab a development board like this without having to order it online would be fantastic.
