I obsess about my Uber rating a lot. I feel really stressed whenever my rating drop. So I avoid using Uber whenever possible.
I am from India, and was working in US back then. Due to visa issues, I couldn't renew my licence and had to rely on Uber for 3 months. I had 4.92 rating before, and within a week or two it dropped to 4.74.
I was following everything that I read in internet-wait for the driver in a easy to locate spot and wave at them, close the door nicely, always bath and wear clean non smelling clothes, wear deo but no strong perfume, engage in pleasant conversation (mostly about the driver) even though I was going through a rough period in my life, always tip (in app) and so on.
When I saw my rating drop despite all this, I came to the wrong conclusion that it might be race related. One time, I even complained to Uber customer care that I suspect I got a lower rating for this ride because the driver didn't like me being Indian and so I would like my tip back (which Uber refunded). For sometime, I used only Lyft. Then came back to Uber because Lyft doesn't operate in India.
After the first month, I started tipping in cash. By the end of 3rd month, I was at 4.9. So I got a happy ending. But I wouldn't use Uber if at all possible precisely because of the rating system.
