I wouldn't call that an easter egg. IMHO it's rather a backdoor. A covert method to gain access to information about the system. Indeed what is the benefit to the user? No need to feed the mythology about BG. He was not a developer. Period.
XDG specs are crap. Sure one single ~/.config folder is a very good idea. But I want it clearly visible such as ~/config. But I don't want an additional and confusing ~/.local.
Plus I don't want ~/Videos or ~/Pictures folders. I am not dumb. Let me organize my folders according to my needs and my will.
The first thing I do when I setup a user account is removing those useless XDG folders.
XDG pretend to remove folder clusterfuck then why do they add their crappy folders?
I use Vim infrequently. I know it and if it was the only option I'd be efficient with it. I've even started with Vi as the only option. However I prefer Emacs because I feel way more efficient and comfortable with it. As a bonus main key bindings are consistent with Bash and others GNU tools. The course should introduce Emacs as well so that students can choose on their own. Whatever your preferred editor is IMHO it is up to an IDE to integrate with it.
This is not quite surprising as I experienced a few times that kids understand pretty well a CLI rather than a GUI. As soon as they can read the concept of a REPL is rather straightforward for many so called computer "illiterates". Say something to the computer through writing it on the keyboard then wait for the processing of it and finally see the result displayed on the screen.
Plus the history of commands is also very intuitive. Is it because it's all based on natural language faculties that we all possess as soon as we are born?
AFAIK the % operator is not deprecated. In fact % formatting being syntactically near identical to C is a feature to me. I use format strings as well depending on context.
% formatting being older doesn't mean it's obsolete.
That said it is cool to design a script to transform your code and any time you spent in the developing of automation is time earned.
Firefox is my browser of choice and I gladly appreciate much of the improvement the devs put in it. However under Linux an improvement would be to get rid of Pulseaudio and to directly interface with ALSA. The benefit would be that installing FF wouldn't require unwanted dependencies and audio quality would be improved.
Nice article. I'm all for it ! I use Pandoc and Makefile as well. Except I use Emacs and Inkscape for SVG graphics. IMHO this is the way to produce documents in the 21st century.
From design point of view this is cool. However it is just a lame PR story. First glass is one of the rare materials that is nearly 100% recyclable it would be a shame to sore it as construction material. Second beer vendors way prefer aluminum which is way toxic for the environment but also remarkably recyclable. The best materials are those not produced furthermore those not littered. Why Heineken just don't fund garbage collector in such areas ? Why not an incentive when people return used bottles or others wastes ?
