Well this comes as a big surprise. I just thought that he'd be taking a break. I also think that he wasn't forced to resign as much as he thought it'd be the best choice for the company (he probably has majority voter control).
Kalanick - because of his super competitive nature - was probably the best person to be CEO during the time he was but maybe its now time for a more matured and seasoned executive to take over. Just my thoughts.
> they're cheaper because they can subsidize their
fares via VC money
That's not the (only) reason why they're cheaper.
They're cheaper because they offer drivers less downtime, therefore the drivers can end up earning more money since they're driving more of the time and earning fares.
They're also cheaper because services like uber pool and lyft line allow riders to spilt the fare among themselves.
I also think that Uber and Lyft will be cheaper than taxis for many more years to come. They're just more efficient as business models than taxis'.
> So sell the gold and buy bitcoins... :-) (JOKE!)
Haha
On a more serious note, I think that bitcoin is a bit too expensive right now. It seems to have been pushed up from demand from China [0] some time ago, but I seems that the Chinese government tried to stop it [1]. I don't know where demand right now is from, though.
I'd be remiss if I didn't say also that it's amazing that bitcoin is something that is much less associated with criminals and the dark economy as it was in the past and is now being popularly used for some really noble things. Same for blockchain.
> those loans are scary
Yeah, they had better IPO soon.
I don't know for sure why they went with such onerous terms but I think that they thought they were growing fast enough and would IPO this year. It turns out that that won't be the case [0], since they still have some deals to make with record labels and others. They have Apple on their heels. I like Spotify a lot but I don't think there prospects are good.
I thought that they'd price a little lower than this ($14-$15) but it seems that the market (1) doesn't care too much about not having a vote or (2) has lots of faith in Snap management.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out over the next 6 months.
I want them to change instead of ending up like Theranos. If Uber went down, a lot of good people would be out of a job (both employees and drivers) and it would burn a lot investors, thus negatively affecting the funding landscape for years to come.
To reiterate, I wish Uber to change. I don't wish them to fail.
A lot of innovation was initially funded by the government especially in Silicon Valley. That said, Spacex is still legally a private company.
Many a time, when companies engage in capital intensive business endeavours they need someone to provide some incentive or even build the initial technology. NASA does this here much like DARPA did with the Internet's initial infrastructure.
I wonder who the people going on this trip are. Are they billionaires, a rich couple planning a honeymoon. You'd have to be rich to do this right? I also wonder which kind of insurance both Spacex and the individuals have for this.
It's amazing that private companies are now doing things that were previously only one by governments and nations.
I don't know how this will work out but congratulations to Musk, Spacex and NASA.
For almost all of history the rich and powerful have had to play by different (more favourable) rules than everyone else. I suppose that the general situation is a better now since people can get into positions of power by means other than their birth and there's democracy, but in some ways much hasn't changed.
It's interesting to me when I think of a world where people that paid higher taxes (absolute values and not a % of income) had more votes during elections.
Although this post is anonymous, Given what has come out recently about Uber, I'm strongly inclined to believe what she wrote. If Uber gets into any more trouble then the board and investors will have to do something because the bad press would be directly hurting their business.
"Visibly angry, Mike#2 covered the microphone of
the conference phone, he reached over to
hold my hand tightly and told me to stop
being a whiny little bitch."
I can't imagine that because someone performs well at their jobs they'd be entitled to treat another person in such a demeaning manner.
I think that after some time people will forget about this. I read an article [1] today about how the anger that a lot of people feel towards Uber right now will not be enough to push them through the discomfort of moving to smaller competitors like Lyft. it's great that Susan Fowler spoke out but it's gonna take more (a much bigger problem) to cause Kalanick to resign (or be pushed out by the board).
I also read his post about wanting to do something else, so I was very surprised when I heard that he had gotten a job at Uber.
I think that Kalanick made the right decision by asking him to resign. They can't afford to have any more controversies surrounding them especially at this time.
I hope all that has happened at Uber can overall make the tech industry better for everyone.
I hazard the latter since they have had a series of problems except the one here.
There was also a time that when you uploaded to Dropbox a file that was already on its servers, instead of storing the new file they stored a reference to the old one (that they already had) as per https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2478567
> So an implementation-detail for a feature on a platform you don't use caused you to shift to another product, which doesn't even support the feature you are complaining about? Am I reading you correct?
I don't think he's talking about only this one issue. Dropbox had an issue with something of this sort recently [0]. They secretly gave their Mac application root privileges. They may have crossed the line for him here. I should say that I'm not speaking for him but I can see how something like this could have been the last straw for someone.
I personally think that the way a company treats it customers is a good display of how good it's culture is. It's not a good sign that they did this.
