My experience with all EU providers so far is yes, you do have to prepay, I think Hetzner for exemple was 20 euros when I signed up years ago?

Most likely they are unwilling to let customers pay later without any guarantee that they're good faith and solvent. Maybe it is a cultural thing? It's only my personal opinion but it never struck me as unreasonable.

Not saying there are companies going above and beyond for customer service but getting a human answer at all when spending single-digit euros a month seems impressive enough; then again I am european so certainly biased :)

What would an american provider have done? Changed their pricing model for you?

Not much to add just wanted to say I share the sentiment and it matches my experience :-) . I'm not smart enough to NOT keep it simple; 90% of stuff I work on at $company is really a CRUDbox and I do NOT want to "astronaut-architect" the whole thing. Comprehensive test-suite, push to prod multiple times a day, feedback, dev.

That's it really.

How are you going to convince your ie hair salon? Being cheeky but I imagine the conversation is going to go like:

- "What the heck is a domain name"

- "What the heck is a vps"

Probably going to doze off by the time you get to explaining an http server.

Don't get me started on the "plain text file". A website that looks like notepad.exe from '95?

It's worse than not sexy, most users would think the website got hacked or something. And I'm not teaching my hair stylist CSS

I'm guessing my car is old enough that is comes with a spark plug socket in the toolbag in the back along with the jack and spare wheel; you're right it probably isn't standard equipment anymore. (Car is Mazda from 2005 for reference)

Only difference is a fried egg on top takes it from a Monsieur to a Madame :-)

For a continental vibe see the french "Croque Madame"

Hmm have not tested but a spark plug doesn't really need shop tools to be replaced; maybe trying with a way bigger repair like "I need my transmission replaced" would bring different results?

Crazy how you probably wouldn't get a slice of cheesecake factory cheesecake on the side of your Macdonald's meal; but never think twice about a medium soda that has the same amount of added sugar

Please don't let the comments deter you from giving the site a try! Ok navigation is finicky on mobile but this isn't a blog post, it's quirky, I find the humor funny and the subject matter deserves some artistic liberty on the presentation side

I used to have a small burner, and would throw a lot of (cold) dry pasta into not so much boiling water. The water would just stop boiling from being cooled down from the pasta, and take 5-6 minutes to come to a boil again. Perhaps something similar?

Can't speak for all italian regions as there are many differences; but this "spooning some sauce over naked pasta" right on the plate always struck me as positively un-italian. I would always expect the pasta and sauce to be mixed in the kitchen, and the pasta to be completely coated in sauce when the plate reached my table. Maybe it's something italian-american ?

Great read, putting into some beautiful prose undigested feelings that have been stewing in my stomach for a while. Maybe I should find a cabinet that's worth painting the back of to me
