> Piracy isn't exactly a zero-sum game, but there is a cost associated with it.

There is zero cost associated with piracy. Zero.

At best, there's an expectation of profit that's not met. To argue that, you need to show how copying a file translates to a potential sale being converted to a no-sale, and there are plenty of evidence that unauthorized distribution of copyrighted work drives demand up.

> Pretending piracy doesn't hurt revenue is a shaky ground to stand on

Go ahead and show exactly where copying a file hurts anyone. You're trying to pass off your personal assertions as axioms, but it's on you to prove that copying a file without the consent of someone hurts anyone.

Go ahead.

> now whatever it hurts the artists revenue is a different question

If anything, artists are the least impacted counterpart as they literally get paid a small fraction of the whole income.

> Later the founders got diluted, I guess by the influx of employees of said startups, big tech or consultancies, like myself, then anyone from the outskirts.

I am one of the new users who contributed to dilute entrepreneurial founder. I didn't worked for a startup when I joined. What made me join and stick around is that NH hosts the best stream of tech-related submissions, and discussions tend to attract knowledgeable people who know what they are talking about, and some of which are even the leading expert on the topic.

I am also an ex slashdot lurker. That place used to serve that itch, but nowadays it reads like their comment section attracts mostly the 4chan crowd. Quite the fall from grace.

> The fact that so many countries have failed to meet their committed goal means they are being subsidized by those that have.

Nonsense. That's not how reality works. Countries like Luxembourg or Portugal aren't "subsidized" because they don't spend 2% of their GDP in dissuading Russia from invading other NATO members.

Also, military spending per GDP is set as a line in the sand. Germany doesn't meet the 2% mark but still is the second biggest supporter of Ukraine's defense against Russia's invasion, which is the whole reason of existence of NATO.

> This may be shocking to you, but _all_ code is effectively compiled to "machine code" eventually.

I'm not sure you understood the point. It means nothing to claim that deep down it's all opcodes or electrons flowing. What matters is being able to transform the code targeting the high level interface to the lowest level interface in a way that remains usable and regression-free. Sometimes compilers for widely popular languages introduce bugs and weird behavior too.

> If you have hundreds of millions of daily active users then needing to write a compiler isn't the end of the world.

It's not the end of the world because they have deep pockets and a problem domain where preserving the interface (I.e., keep everything still running on PHP) and optimizing the infrastructure that provides it is more cost effective and least disruptive than switching to a tech stack that is more performant.

> Facebook had hundreds of millions daily active users before writing a compiler.

In other words, Facebook felt compelled to write a compiler when they had hundreds of millions daily active users.
