I'd be interested to know more about the telemetry part as well. So far I've comforted myself by thinking that the Intel Management Engine is mostly a theoretical vulnerability, rather than something that's practically going to affect me. I'd also like to know if this telemetry only affects the newer Intel machines with the Platform Controller Hub, or the older Memory Controller Hub architectures as well, since I'm still using a Core 2 Duo machine.

There is a difference between freedom of speech as a cultural concept, and as a legal concept. When most people say "freedom of speech", I doubt they mean it in a specific, literal legal sense, but rather as a vague idea, a general principle. That idea may include corporations being allowed to fire people based on their political views. But when it becomes standard behaviour for people not to mention their political views publicly due to fear of losing their jobs, I doubt that is the kind of society that will have freedom of speech in culture or in working legal sense much longer. Nor do I think that people have such a society in mind when they imagine a "free society".

I hope I'm not too cynical, but I think "freedom" is more of a meme than something that most people value. Whenever there are news stories about governments spying on their own citizens or restricting free speech, most people seem to just shrug and move on with their lives.
