Red Flag Laws = Gun Confiscation Orders. Just because they aren't using the most accurate terms doesn't mean I am editorializing the article. Look at their implementation in the states.
All of these laws have the same ends, gun confiscation before due process. Maybe the due process takes place in a week, maybe it takes place in a year, in any case, these are gun confiscation orders with no conviction of a crime and in many cases, no evidence that a crime has even occurred.
Those are my feelings too.. I understand how the public can be swayed by inaccurate media representations, but it's Y Combinator which seems to portray itself as a source of intelligent people.
I agree with what you're saying, but I don't think the "liberal mentality" is a problem.
Plenty of liberals realize they are actually pro-gun if you just sit them down and explain the restrictions which are already in place. The democratic party has been hijacked by Bloomberg dollars through Everytown, which is why the candidates all went way further left of the overton window.
At the end of the day, people believe in self-preservation, but they've been misguided by the media to believe that gun laws are something they are not. Basic facts can cut through their lies, the hard part is promoting that message without billionaire funding.
The problem is that people hold vaccines and "herd immunity" so dearly to themselves that they're afraid to accept that they have side effects just like any other medication. Gardasil (HPV Vaccine) for example is responsible for a slew of well-documented side effects (paralysis, GBS, etc) causing countries like Japan to stop recommending them. Add in it's inefficiencies at actually vaccinating against HPV and that the big risk of catching HPV is through an elective behavior and it's clear it shouldn't be mandatory.
Individual vaccines can be argued against their own merits, but unfortunately as you say the "Overton Window" is rife with people who are swallowing down opioids like candy and believe anything that comes in the form of a pharmaceutical is gold. The reality is most medications have extensive side effects, and vaccines are no exception. Unfortunately nobody can have an honest conversation on which ones are worth it and which ones aren't because of the uneducated stigma associated with the average anti-vax beliefs.
I'd cater that the same thing is the case with climate change. I read some comments today from people who unironically believe that humanity will be wiped out within 12 years. Al Gore said that 20 years ago and here we still are.
I'd advise people to be more open minded and try and convert the anti-vaxxers to the correct side. Of course you can admit that measles isn't so bad of a disease while still promoting it's vaccines, and surely that will garner more support than advocating strapping anti-vaxxers to a table and shoving a needle in their arm.
Seriously? I just assume most people on there are in high school, it seems like a place where the lowest common denominator ideas get upvoted and everything else gets nailed.
I went to Syracuse University and the police force there are a joke. They're your average overpaid, overworked hillbillies who will smoke a cigar in your face while issuing you a ticket and send everything less than a SWAT team to break up a house party.
I hope railroading this guy assures that none of my amazon packages are ever stolen in this kind of scheme again. I don't feel bad for him whatsoever. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Um. Yes? What has this guy done in the past 5 years? All the linked commenters saying how great his work is posted 10 year old videos of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.
Maybe the better question is, is Walt Mossberg still relevant to the technology scene?
Reducing carbon emissions sounds good until you consider that you could actually just save up some money, move somewhere away from the shore, and live out the rest of your life.
What incentives are the carbon-reducing crowds providing for the common man? Are they going to finally get it together and build affordable housing in our coastal cities? Are they going to let us park electric vehicles or do we have to ride the bike? Can we still use cash or does every business have to be cash free? Are they going to assure that my water is safe to drink or just ban plastic water bottles and let me die? Can we be responsible for our own safety or do we have to live in a police state?
There is there no semblance of choice on the opposing side. It's all or nothing "REDUCE WASTEFUL BEHAVIORS NOW" (but look the other way as we allow business to do whatever they like). Who would ever submit to that? I'd rather plan my contingency now than become a slave to whatever future the bureaucrats decide for us.
You should do some reading on pre-public education America, there actually wasn't much demand for it and private education served communities very well.
Man, I'm 25 and I feel like I've survived 10 apocalypse's already. What happened to Gore's prediction about the polar ice caps disappearing in 5 years?
