I think a physical paper map is superior to a "smart" phone.
I have been asked by a helpless 20yo who was tapping on his phone searching for a train station. I dragged him over to the gasp subway map that was literally 5 meters away. He followed reluctantly, and I found the station in 10 seconds.
(Note that I also had not heard of that particular station before.)
