Ask HN: Which job sites are people using for remote jobs?
I’m looking at finding my next software engineering position. I’m based in U.K. but don’t want to be restricted to just U.K. companies so I’m looking for remote positions too. There seems to be a ton of job sites out there now, does any one have any recommendations for which ones are worth the time signing up for?

Take advantage of the fact that, right now, all (software engineering) jobs are remote, for (pretty much) all companies. Even when the pandemic is over, many companies will keep the remote model as they had the chance to see its advantages -- or at the very least they will be open to be flexible when hiring remote engineers.
In other words, keep applying using the traditional methods (LinkedIn, standard job sites), and during interviews try to explore what are the company's long-term views on remote work.

A few I've recently looked at:

https://www.remote.io/
https://www.jobfluent.com/
Any ideas on how to start as a freelance besides the usual suspects? sorry for the hijack of the thread

I think you mean my site https://remoteOK.io.
The other one is a site that's been made to make money from confusing people it's actually Remote OK. The owner admitted that and even used the same logo as Remote OK (without OK) until I send a lawyer to take it down.
Very annoying but I guess that's how business works

Ha, sorry pieter, I didn't know about it being a ripoff, I guess I was one of the confused ones.
I can't edit now, should I ask @dang to change the url to remoteok?
Sorry for the slip up!

Ha np. Did you use those to look for full time work or freelance jobs?
RemoteOk developed by Pieter Levels: https://remoteok.io
His blog https://levels.io is interesting in itself.

Google Jobs has a pretty good search interface. It seems to get a lot of the postings, but not stuff from smaller/non-job-board sites like this. I think the who's hiring thread has links to searchable postings from this site. Unfortunately, they aren't very useful for me since most of the postings are for seniors.
I let recruiters do the work.
The insight is that I make their job easier by having the right resources and presentation in place.

We have in the past taken on Trainee Engineers where we provide a salaried position for someone who wants to become a developer and provide training. We are not currently taking on any more Trainee Engineers at this time, but for reference - https://evolvedbinary.com/careers.html free free to get in touch and we can always let you know in future when we open up more positions.
This only works if you're not a junior
And what does that look like?
huh. amazing I got voted into oblivion. But thanks for the question!
all the standard linkedin best practices to start.
load up your profile with all the buzzwords. Your CV is nothing but keyword stuffing into a search ending.
Write the title/headline for the job you want, no the one you have.
profile and summary should include ANYTHING you have done that supports the story claimed in the headline above.
side projects.
github repos
student projects
that flask app to help mom track birthdays
anything that has a story.
then pay the money (yes, $50 / month is a sacrifice but worth the pain) and that give you the ability to scale your reach and hitup all the recruiters.
get them on a call (the good ones will give you 15-20 minutes) and have the conversation.
Ask them about the market. Salaries, positions they are seeing.
They want to meet you as much as you want to meet them.

I tried some of this, mostly because I was curious, but, although they said 'remote very possible', jobs always turned out to actually be on location. Did covid change this radically?
I found my part-time remote on Dice.com in 2017. The company was (still) in South Carolina. I'm in Florida
For my full-time position remote I'm in now I used indeed.com. This company is based in NY, NY.
