My guess but his finger was very swollen/red, and he was probably fidgeting a lot trying to get the ring off. So airline staff probably noticed this strange behavior, and asked if he needed help.
One of his comments:

Its just insane for people to carry lithium-ion batteries on their finger in a restricted ring.
A phone in your pocket is already dangerous if he goes, but on your finger it can restrict the blood flow or burst. One finger or even more can be gone, if that battery goes.
I never understood how a device like this gets approved by management.
