While this is another ridiculous attempt by the government to exert control, there is something a little odd about an ostensibly neutral encyclopedia being owned by a wealthy, openly politicized nonprofit. When Wikipedia begs for donations, only a fraction of the money goes towards the direct costs of hosting the site (a few million a year), with the rest going to the bloated Wikimedia Foundation, which has 550 employees and a $400 million war chest [1], while administrators and editors get paid nothing. Recall that Wikipedia ran for years with no staff and a shoestring budget.

It's no surprise, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_President
It's less a misunderstanding and more of a need to control.
Ted Cruz doesn't need to understand Wikipedia to pander to his base.
Are there any examples that he is referring to?
Larry Sanger, Wikipedia’s cofounder has many - https://larrysanger.org/nine-theses/
That's what the American GOP sells basically...
I grew up in a rural area, I go back home from time to time. A pair of old friends are big time anti porn crusaders on their social media accounts and so on. They have this almost apocalyptic idea of what porn is or does to people / the world. I don't even know how to approach what they talk about when it comes up and it inevitably mixes with talk about people who are gay or trans. Other old friends have fallen into this 24 hour news cycle of fear and so on.
Same goes for their idea of what even is going on in the city I live in. I'm not at all sure how they address the fact that I seem to live in the same city, just fine, that they post fake documentaries about ... about how it's open gang warfare on the streets.
