even though refresh times might be slow for anything else having an e-paper external monitor for word-processing would make total sense from an ergonomics perspective. a lot of people spend many hours a day writing/editing text and e-paper is much more eye-friendly.

I am especially interested in the history leading to software verification in avionics, the involvement of insurance companies and government regulation.
adaption of ML style languages suffers from the unfamiliar syntax, the pretty steep learning curve for those trained in imperative dialects at 'java-school'.
at least when it comes to syntax mythryl might someday provide an option. its basically SML/NJ with a c-like syntax and multithreading support. still very much in development but looks promising: mythryl.org
that said Haskell certainly seems to be the winner of the current functional language trend.
if anything this as just re-injected new life into the elsevier-protests and the sorry state of academic publishing in general.
elsevier's business practices are well documented and the protest is not just manned by some fringe people but has support from prestigious institutions and scholars.
with each new round like this people will educate themselves even more about open access and contemporary free and open source tools for academic work.
zotero probably will win this out and be pushed to mimic mendely features soon enough. zotero already is pretty good but its social features need to developed or integrated with other platforms like arxiv or academia.net.
last not least given googles science-bias and foothold in academia not least with google-scholar and google docs I wonder why they haven't made a move with respect to citation management.

both IBM and Oracle have committed to two more generations of POWER nor SPARC. also there is Fujitsu keeping investing into SPARC. these uarchs are not going to go away anytime soon. they are high-margin niche products in the enterprise space and government with considerable footprints and huge long term service contracts attached to them.
POWER and SPARC are not competing against low-power CPU's but aim for the high-socket count, large unified memory, RAS market which for some workloads is the only alternative.
especially SPARC while having shrinking market share still makes Oracle more than a billion annually. afaik IBM's Power division is not loosing money either.
long story short: in the next five years there will be at least four ISA's (ARM, SPARC, POWER, X86) in the server space, but not all compete for the same markets.
blaming the decline of the industry on the sound quality of mp3 is plain bs. well encoded mp3 with bitrates higher than 169kbps have repeatedly been shown indistinguishable from the original.

there were some attempts to include multithreading into standard ml. john reppy's manticore project came quite far but wasn't fully implemented.
