It is illegal for police, citizens and private security guards to use lethal force unless their or someone else's life is under serious threat. However the bar is very low for cops. Cops often shoot even people running away from them and still don't get punished for it.
The big difference between Government and Startups is the fact that Governments by definition are monopolies. You gotta totally leave the country/state/city if you are unhappy with them. Startups die pretty quickly creating signals as to what one needs to do to stay alive. Governments on other hand can even kill people and nothing much changes.
Of course you can see bad government vs good governments at national level and judge them by migration of people.
Every company out there cares for money lot more than anything else. Heck why company even Presidents and Congress cares more about taking other people's money.
This is purely idiotic opinion and should not have a place on a forum like HN of all places.
A lot of things like Linux or Open Office started purely out of hardwork of handful passionate people. Most of those people did not make much money in the process either but the y were purely driven by the joy of building something interesting. THAT is the nerd culture.
Bitcoin idea was floated by and contributed to by many folks who were not interested in making money but rather in solving interesting problems. Cryptocurrency is not a very hard tech but anyone remotely into tech will be able to appreciate all the theoretical and practical work that has gone into it.
Now, people engaging in bitcoin trading thinking it will make them filthy rich might be stupid but then that does not make the technology or its creators a scam.
At this point it is more like a salvage operation and I am unable to see anything good that will come of out this. Verizon should not be selling Tumblr they should be offering money to someone to take it.
I was a big fan of Tumblr porn. I havent visited the site since they stopped serving porn.
Wait, Google has built it's index using its own resources but for some reason they should make it public ? Why?
I instead propose something that actually makes sense
1. Audit Pentagon and make the report public
2. Audit the fed and make the report public
3. Audit Whitehouse and make all communication public 2 years later.
Every student who comes to F1 needs to lie that they have no intention of staying back in USA. They can't say I will try to get a job and H1B. But that is what they do.
My village had a local soda factory. There was little oversight in terms of health and safety and the factory would simply pump ground water for their use. Bottles often were not cleaned properly. (In India soda glass bottles are always returned back and reused heavily.)
When the pepsi and coke started fighting a bloody war one could buy a local soda 300ml for Rs 4 where as pepsi would sell their 200ml bottle for Rs 5. Yet people preferred pepsi. That caused the doom of the local company eventually.
I have a lot of respect for Taleb but I think he always overstates any conclusion. There is no doubt that IQ does not capture a hell lot of things. There is no doubt that many people will succeed in life despite flunking at IQ tests (Feynman scored mere 126 in mensa test).
The question is does IQ gives you some idea about the person's behavior in real life or not ? I think it is indisputably yes.
