I banned the reddit URL from my laptop so i cant go on it anymore. The extreme left wing bent is nuts, I had to go to 4chan unfortunately. Free speech used to be an ideal for the internet, now you can only get it on a few websites which is too bad. Also a lot of botting and astroturfing from foreign nations and those looking to curry support. On the business side, I can see reddit slowly becoming a new quora.
As someone who has been a partner in a fund in the past, I've done a solid amount of research, and for someone who is risk averse, one of the best strategies of the last 50 years has been 33% of your investment in real estate, 33% in hedge funds, and 33% in a portfolio balanced between stocks and bonds. I don't have the study on hand, and I also don't have the time to search for it, but doing research into the hedge fund field will probably yield this study. good luck
There was something my AP literature teacher told us when someone asked why literary analysis would ever be necessary; he said something along the lines of: “math and physics might be more valuable in the job market, but if you’re ever depressed or your soul needs nourishment you’re far more likely to reach for classic literature than the math textbook.” 5 years later and I find a lot more peace and joy in pondering the topics literature is focused on; love, death, life, purpose, war, compared to sifting thru the endless news on hacker news.
Literature and the great novels have consistent themes that are unending in their search for answers, and often this evokes a deeper level of thought compared to the internet.
That said, when I do watch tv I try to stick to artistic movies or something I can learn from. Recently I watched Come and See, an excellent movie about Nazis in Belaruse. After watching it I thought this movie deserves a literary analysis of its own.
I agree, I think the days of someone like Yang polling 5% in some places, but getting left out of tons of media, pushed aside on the debate stage, etc will come to an end. The media generally pretends like Bernie Sanders doesn't exist, and they acted like Trump had zero vision or capability from day one. To sum is up that arrogance has to end for them to remain relevant. The antics need to end, too. Currently it looks like the DNC and media have systematically propped up candidates one by one (Buttigeg, Biden, Warren, Harris, Klobuchar) in order to split the vote and take it to super delegates the same way it was done in 2016 with Bernie. I don't agree with any of them, but for the DNC and media to stay relevant things need to change.
No one has said it yet to my surprise. Arguably the most trusted news outlet in America today is the financial times. Wall Street Journal at one time was a competitor, but it feels like less so today. I would support the argument made previously in this thread, that the news orgs in print and paywalled online produce better content because they don't have to run the rats race of outrage and ads - FT is one of those.
Yes, I realize this, and my belief is that American needs to decouple with China and bring the total net trade between the two down by 70-80%, leaving rare earths, agriculture, and some manufacturing left in the balance of trade. When two systems are so far off of each other, there cannot be fair agreement between the two. As a result the only three options are containment, playing by communist rules, or walking away. In my mind oppression and state communism are not ethical, and so the only option is to walk away.
That's a good point, I've always seen Uighur but who knows. The Chinese story has not gained a network effect yet, not enough people know about it to make it a profitable target for media companies. Occasionally you'll see a story on it, but until more people understand china headlines won't drive clicks.
Sorry you are right, I refer to the 50 cent army as Chinese nationalists in general. Given that there is no way to literally verify, to me it’s all the same. My definition would be closer to “those who go out of the way to champion the ccp party line.” For example, going on a multi paragraph rant about the glories of the chinese communist party, or complete non sequiters.
So yes by absurd infiltration I’m talking about Chinese nationalists in general. Why not give a clear example? Because there is no verification of identity on YouTube or any social media
The favoured retort of the pro CCP group is American imperialism. No doubt, I agree it is no longer in America's best interest to defend foreign nations and to meddle internationally.
However, that does not excuse your ignorance. A totalitarian regime that has caused more death than any other regime in history; one that primarily values wealth over freedom; one that does not believe in the sanctity of human life (ie Uighurs) is not fit to be influencing global culture.
Moreover, I agree American foreign imperialism has caused awful things to happen, but one thing no one ever realizes:
this is the only time in human history that the world has had a monopole aka one dominant super power by far. Usually the world is bipolar or multipolar. Yet the last 70 years has yielded the fewest deaths from war as a percent of the global population in history. Should America be upset with its past? Sure. However, if China had been the global monopole for the last 70 years I do not believe the total death toll from war would be so low. thanks for ur opinion
