Enjoy being a slave to a machine, I guess?

Computers are tools that exist to serve humans. Humans should never be asked to become subservient to computers. Your suggestion is ludicrous and risible.

> I can't even think of any good faith motivation for doing this, other than to cover up the shortage and to keep the public pacified

Yes

I asked for evidence and you accuse me of "turning to emotions".

Honestly I don't know what to say. Good luck to you.

> It's pretty straightforward to give a modern agentic system will and desire

That is your will and desire. They are following your instructions. There is no "intelligence" there.

> I genuinely don't understand what people mean when they say cutting-edge AI is not generally intelligent

I don't really know where to go either. From my perspective you are too far down the rabbit hole and I don't think we can come to a meaningful shared understanding.

Good luck with that.

> We’re past the point where there’s any concrete intellectual capability that AIs can’t demonstrate

How about "will" and "desire"? These seem like things an actual intelligence would have.

> it’s clear to me that the remaining holdouts have religious objections at this point

From where I sit, it sure seems like claims of having achieved AGI are religious in nature.

- The very definition of AGI is not agreed upon, much less definitions of god

- Despite the burden of proof being on those claiming AGI, every request for proof is spurned with a "no u"

Interesting that you think there is no ideology involved in that kind of politics writ small.

"You only disagree with me because you are insecure"

This is not a convincing argument.

> I think there is a lot of overlap between politics and ideology

What is politics without ideology?

People can just choose to ignore questions they don't feel like answering for whatever reason.

> obviously

If it was obvious I don't think there would be disagreement.

Are you claiming they have AGI or are "close" to it?

I live in Japan and developed an allergy to cedar pollen after I came. I started sublingual immunotherapy (a pill of concentrated pollen you dissolve under your tongue) three years ago and now can make it through the pollen season symptom-free. Supposedly you even keep the immunity after stopping the medication, though I have not tested that yet.

Instagram makes it extremely frustrating without an account. Many times I have checked a small business's opening times on Google Maps only to arrive and find them closed... the only place they reliably post their times is on Instagram.

I gave up and got Instagram.

I use YouTube on Firefox (with uBlock Origin) almost exclusively and this has not been my experience.

That's exactly the "dependency cooldowns" we have right now that the author argues against.

To visually compare characters you need to map them to glyphs; what is the glyphset and how much of Unicode does it actually cover?

It only seems to work for some subset of CJK characters. I haven't been able to figure out why some work and some don't.

For instance 叱 and 明 both seem to fail in the same way: U+1F996 T-REX in the upper left corner and the URL fragment fails to update.

I do see a handful of people using non-ASCII identifiers in their code, but that's rare. Much more common is explanatory comments, docstrings, etc. in the local language. To require those to be ASCII would be a non-starter.
