The GPL gives developers an incentive to make their code free, which is better for the developer. It's therefore better for everyone.

Isn't this possible by design? All Windows executables at least used to be also valid DOS programs that just output "This program cannot be run in DOS mode".

Which is completely backwards. You don't need mobile where you live (as long as you can get a landline), you need it everywhere else.
