I did something similar some years ago as a personal project to keep an usable and searchable local copy of the interesting stuff found online: a web app that fetch Pocket read later list, convert the articles to pdf stripping not useful parts (and ads), archive them in a Dropbox folder and finally delete the Pocket elements themselves to keep the list clear (and obtain a little more privacy).
Soon I will get a new e-reader, perhaps I could refresh and publish it on GitHub :)

Of course the login should be a voluntary action by the user.
Btw luckily what reported doesn't work for me, the site ask to login. It should not be even possibile, at least without exploting a bug/vulnerability.
Have you got a new SIM from a local operator (which one?) or are you using your old one ? In the last case perhaps there is a problem in the roaming config.
In Italy the connection is pretty good (50 down /10 up Mbps), at least in the urban areas.
Basic contracts give you unlimited voice, unlimited texts, 50-70GB/month for about €8.
