Because backwards compatibility expectations make it hard. Also telecoms are evil and greedy so unless you are actually going to stop paying for a phone they won’t lift a finger to improve anything. Countries with newer phone systems at least support Alphaneumeric Senders.

Because there is a real problem that needs to be solved one way or another.

> The technology is just not there yet.

The technology literally can NEVER be there. It is completely impossible to positively identify a bulge in clothing as a handgun. But that doesn’t stop irresponsible salesmen from making the claim anyway.

What does the energy source have to do with anything? Creepy tracking in ICE cars is also problematic and just as common.

Citizen is really enshittified, so any alternative would be better. I don’t object to them charging for their service, but they use all kinds of predatory editorial tactics and push notifications and marketing copy to instill primal fear that your neighborhood is imminently burning down and you will get shot if you don’t subscribe to a higher tier of service from them. Crime is way down in the US but you really don’t feel that way when you are a subscriber/user of Citizen.

I go back and forth on my opinion for this one. You wouldn’t necessarily want a mechanic or engineer to drive a race car, for example.

>it has nothing to do with spam or anything

What experience do you have to have gained this confident knowledge?

Wow I guess it’s been long enough. The mid aughts explored this whole world extensively and it all sucked which is why we ended up where we are. Although watching video content wasn’t a thing the last time around so maybe there is room for improvement now…

The compression level of MMS is set by the carrier, and cannot be changed or even queried.

If only the laborers could organize in order to perform such an election to determine their collective actions.

Yes, feature creep has happened in a really big way because there is an obvious profit incentive to Google if every last bit of computing happens in-browser. Glossing over the thorny topics like “my browser shouldn’t care what hardware I run it on”, the Web* set of standards hasn’t stopped ballooning since the release of chrome. WebRTC made sense. But WebUSB? WebGPU? WebAssembly? etc. etc. Each can have interesting use cases individually, but in aggregate they have become a whole second operating system filled with compromise and bloat.

Blame the War on Drugs and our asinine DEA with drug scheduling that is completely decoupled from science and reality. Never vote Republican, they just enjoy torturing the sick.

This has caused so many extremes in my life that I know actively avoid stimulant medications even though they objectively improve my quality of life. I wish excruciating agony upon the DEA and anyone who supports the current schedule system. It is just torturing the ill so that mediocre busybodies can feel superior without actually accomplishing anything.

Actions speak louder than words and history shows us that the movement exists for people who hoard obscene wealth to justify their hoarding retroactively while playing cowboy on a tropical island.

I think it’s important to note that such a depiction failed spectacularly.

He was raised at Stanford by two Stanford professors and surrounded by blowhards that subscribe to the insane concept of “effective altruism”. It’s really no surprise he ended up this way.

Everyone here on Hacker News seems to be painting this issue as universally disliked and unwanted and obviously bad. However, that is just blatantly not the case. The “think of the children” and “all opposition are pedophiles” arguments are very powerful and effective. It is important to know your enemy if you wish to defeat them, burying your head in the sand accomplishes nothing.
