If exposure to air is bad, it's possible that re-bottling wouldn't work well. I don't know if bottled olive oil is treated like many other packaged foods and sealed in with an inert(ish) gas, but I wouldn't be surprised if this were the case. I don't know how you could replicate that at home.

I assume that the olive oil I buy in the store is very old compared to fresh-pressed oil. Similarly, my aunt has an avocado tree, and her fresh-picked avocados stay ripe for weeks, unlike the store-bought kind that have a sweet spot of ~36 hours.

Olive oil should be used within a reasonably short time of opening, which makes Costco-sized bottles less practical. We buy honey and vanilla extract from Costco, but we don't use olive oil anywhere near fast enough to justify buying Costco-sized jugs.

I have been bitten by this in the past. At least now they give warnings in-app that the app will expire soon. But if you don't use the app regularly, you wouldn't even know. Also, I'm not aware of any other apps that die in this way, so it's not like people are in the habit of periodically checking the app to make sure they're still on a version that can receive incoming messages.

My guess is that GP's knowledge that led him to be able to create the shareware was derived from his employment, and quite possibly involved trade secrets. Creating and releasing software related to his work likely violated his employment agreement.

Yep, the same one. You probably heard of us from our Show HN, [1] which I later found out was the 9th-most-popular Show HN, by upvote count. It really gave us a boost, and led to a flurry of media coverage!

We still have our browser plugins for web [2] and PDF, [3] but are now also integrated into education platforms, [4] and even some news websites. [5]

I've been bootstrapping it (and raising a family) so growth has not been as meteoric as some other startups, but it's been consistently up-and-to-the-right!

If there's ever a platform you'd like to see us work with, just let us know and we'll get on it.

You might check out BeeLine Reader (I am the creator). [1] It's fairly popular in the ADHD community because it enhances visual focus while you're reading. Some people are able to read for 2x-10x as long with BeeLine versus without. I'm always happy to help out HNers with a free code for our browser plugin, just shoot me an email (contact in profile).

Oh yeah, I watched an episode or two of that. Of course, it's not actual jury duty — it's all fake. I assumed that food was provided because that keeps them all together, for filming purposes. When I served, people split up at lunchtime and went to various different restaurants.

Free lunch? Where is this? I've served in CA and have never heard of such a thing!

If I had data locked up in some software I would rather have an ongoing relationship rather than just hope that they decide to make a new version when an OS update or other critical need arises.

One issue is that when you build on someone else's platform (Chrome Webstore, iOS App Store, etc.), you have to periodically make updates just to stay in the store. Sometimes these are very large changes, like with MV3.

If I sold my software one-off, I could charge people again for an MV3-compatible version to cover the cost of the transition. But many/most people wouldn't understand what was happening, and there would probably be a lot of confusion/unhappiness with having to pay again just to maintain the same feature set.

People are used to buying subscriptions, and part of the reason why is that developers are constantly having to update their software just to stay 'alive' in the app stores. I do long for the days of purchasing software versions and upgrading when needed. But those days are fading into the rear view mirror, it would seem.

> The company always to prefers to pocket your dollars as profit. If you send them a check or something, that's what they'll do.

And I'm free to stop subscribing if the service gets worse (or doesn't get better as fast as I'd like).

FWIW, there seem to be more employee affinity groups for dyslexia or neurodiversity in general. I think you've identified some of the reasons why. I've also heard nightmares about getting support services in the UK. One person told me that she had been diagnosed and was receiving some assistive technology supports, but to get access to tools she wasn't previously aware of (my startup's browser plugin), she would need to go through the diagnosis process again. Not surprisingly, she chose not to and just paid out-of-pocket.

Would it work as well with quarters or dollar bills from a designated Souvenir Fund?

Fair enough! I don't think email threads are best for daily spousal communication, but perhaps for some people this could work. It sure would be easier to search than Apple Messages!

When we're on our computers, email notifications come up unless we're in DND (and even then, they show up whenever your email client is visible regardless).

Agreed. I've been missing this since AIM went bust.

I also wish there were a way for me to send a low-priority message to my wife so that it didn't notify her regardless of her notification settings. We send each other news articles throughout the day but don't really want to interrupt each other. It would be great if there were a sender-side option that could enable this.

I've thought about using a shared document in the Notes app, or just use a different messaging app for low-priority stuff, but it seems like too much overhead. Does anyone else have a way of handling this?

I’ve installed Phillips LEDs in various enclosures and had no issues in 3 years. Frankly, the hum issues that I have encountered with dimmer switches and LEDs (even when not dimmed, and even when using supposedly dimmable LEDs) make them more suitable for use in an enclosure. That way you can’t hear them buzz, like in an open chandelier.
