Schools are nominally about learning but actually about a whole of other stuff -- it's a non-goal to get better or revolutionize it, so that's the main blocker for actually getting better at teaching students.

Parents want their kids to get into college, admins want to keep the parents at bay, teachers are trying to get by, unions want teacher protections, etc. There's no QBR where people look at the stats and iterate.

What’s the issue with GDPR? If it is similar to other Apple products where data is collected / processed at the edge, then no more issues than anything else they do.

Yup, a nice MacBook Pro. I have no use for it though, I'm probably just going to wipe it and sell it or give it to someone that needs it.

I was one of the 17% laid off from CircleCI today. It's true, we did get to keep our laptops :) As for reasons, it doesn't seem to be from any current woes in the numbers (or at least from the stats I saw).

So, um, anyone looking for a PM with experience in security or data privacy? Hit me up!

I'm happy to answer any questions I can, and good luck to all those who've been laid off recently (at Circle or otherwise).

Hello, sort of random, but hodder, if you read this, thanks for your tip on metallurgical coal back in this thread - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22069310. I went long on HCC after the pandemic plunge in March and it is (knock on wood) turning out pretty nice!

“Underpaying” workers. There are many long term Lyft / Uber / Instacart contractors out there. They have communities, share tips, etc. They seem fairly well educated on how much they are getting, and decide its worth it to tghem. How can you say they are underpaid?

This idea of micro-shifts sounds made up. Can you reference any companies that have this setup as an employer-employee relationship?

Point taken, but a lot of people seem to really like their credit union (which is a bank).

You are looking at reddit solely through the lens of politics. I do agree that it is not a great place for political debate. However, would you allow for the fact that setting aside USA national politics, there is a lot of value? I subscribe to subreddits about kombucha making, MTG, retirement saving, minimalism, and in those areas there is quite a lot of reasonable discussion.

Well, there is quite a bit of free expression still. Anyone is empowered to make a subreddit and moderate how they please. What more do you want?
