Lots of binary tree questions are just a variation of depth search.
I'm sure I've actually coded some variation of depth first traversal at least a hundred times during my work as professional programmer in past ten years.
So those questions are not really as impractical as some might think. Being able to write simple binary tree traversal correctly is absolutely minimum I would expect from an interviewee.
