And most patent trolls are just a few jackass lawyers, not large established companies like Nokia.

I see jokes here often enough, but they have to be tasteful, original and clever. What doesn't fly here is the lazy reddit style of joking where you just quote some lame meme or movie quip for the millionth time.

Are you alluding to some particular hypocrisy in my comment history, or do you consider me a hypocritical merely because I have nuanced opinions on leadership that depend on the stakes and context?

Democracy is a fine way to run a nation, but not a ship, plane or platoon of soldiers. Context is everything. If you think there is any one single system of leadership that is ideal in any conceivable situation, then I fear you must be a clueless ideologue. Lacking an appreciation for nuance is the mark of shallow thinker.

In small groups where decisions must be made in a timely and decisive manner, a mediocre leader is often better than the best democratic committee. Even in programming teams, somebody needs to put their foot down eventually or things will be bikeshedded to death. FOSS projects too, generally benefit from a BDFL.

Be careful about extrapolating this out to the rule of countries though, dictatorships can make things go south worse than any other system. At least with FOSS projects, people can fork without fleeing their homes.

Snowden's only value to the US is satisfying the grudge the government has against him. There's no practical value to everyday Americans in getting Snowden back now, whatever beans he had are spilt years ago.

> 13% risk is a number controlling out other factors

So is the other figure, so the comparison is valid. Maybe wood dust is more dangerous that you assume?

BTW, the asbestos in baby powder had nothing to do with industrial use of asbestos. It was in the talc because asbestos and talc are frequently coincident in the ground.

Secret courts aren't an accident. "Whoops my hand slipped and I accidentally drafted thousands of pages of legislation!"

No, secret courts are deliberate and malicious. Hanlon's razor is for credulous fools.

As somebody who sometimes puts slept laptops into bags, No! A laptop ever waking itself from sleep is an abomination.

It's a product of sports-teams consumerism. People make affiliation with a sports team or corporate brand into part of their identity. When they fall out with one brand they feel compelled to fill the resulting void in their soul with another affiliation. That's why Google behaving badly prompts them to reconsider the merits of a completely different corporation.

Those people also forget or deliberately ignore the existence if MacOS, and generally exaggerate the state of Android. MacOS isn't locked down like iOS yet normal laypeople can use it just fine without shooting themselves in the foot. And if there is a problem with Android, it isn't ""sideloaded"" apps but rather all the shitware in Google's own appstore. None of these three are anything like the wild west that was late 90s early 00s windows. Even Windows itself isn't that way anymore.

Self aggrandizing comparison, whole article is a humblebrag about how powerful the author is. You're an insignificant spec compared to the old grand lizard. In your most destructive, you are nothing like him. In your most heroic moments, you are nothing like him. If you ever think to compare yourself to Godzilla, the only similarity is your rampaging ego.

And this kind of thing, trouble with a boss/landlord/etc, is a lot more likely to personally impact the average person than any sort of PV-related scenario. Single party consent is a clear net positive for most people.
