He made a controller that allows solar panels to directly heat the concrete. I'm not sure if he invented anything. He made a controller, open sourced it, and produced & sold them near cost.
PS. I'm amazed he has received only 58,000 CAD. This is one seriously underfunded genius dude. Any VCs out there reading this should be beating down his door.
Here in Hungary I often see a sign saying that this beer stand or hot dog stand was funded by the EU & received about 60,000 euros. Somehow Europe does not have priorities straight or nobody in Europe have located Dacian (from Romania.. EU country) to give him more money than the average Hungarian hot dog stand receives.
Soon Europe will need to expend more energy to heat during winters. Currently this is done with coal & Russian Gas (& French nukes)
Dacian has a better way that is actually cheaper than burning gas. Solar power used to directly heat a big thermal mass.
He moves generated electricity into big resistors within the concrete block & there is a controller that turn on / off those resistors. Concrete heats up by day & radiates heat at night.
Another cheap way is to heat a barrel of water using the resistance of wires running into that barrel.

One problem with this off grid in Kauai story is that he must have friends & family & when you live in the middle of the Pacific in Hawaii, that means friends & family flying 1/4 around the world to come & see you. That's going to sink any green savings for quite a while.
Yup. Diesel is so expensive, I don't understand why they are making 2030 plans. Why not 2018 plans? Solar panels are now about 40c / installed watt or less. They will have trouble getting much below that with even Chinese panel manufacturers barely breaking even. Interest rates are still very low.
Just get everyone involved & roll that solar out. Not a biggie. The savings will be immediate over burning diesel to generate electricity.

If he doesn't want to use any commercial software. This includes IntelliJ or other IDEs? Good luck writing software! Then again, the time he saves from not dealing with iOS provisioning might give him a couple extra years to write other software.

I realize historically there was only low level software that existed. These days we've got much higher level services which really could benefit from free software.
He hits on these ideas. Maybe he'd be open to working on these sorts of things.
Services have gotten to the level where they are taking a piece of people's livelihoods. Uber & Airbnb takes 20-30%. why?
Amazon is a system of warehousing & distribution... could something like that be run in a distributed / cooperative way which provides as much opportunity to 3rd party retailers as it does Amazon? A level playing field.
These are the sorts of things that the free software movement could move towards now.
which platform was that? I am on IB & schwab. I've noticed on high volume days the Schwab desktop platform is not as available. Plus, Schwab has no up/down status page. Interactive Brokers has been more available & has the up/down status.
