The problem isn’t tricky at all, actually.

Just because the punishment for seeking mental health care is losing one’s entire career doesn’t make these problems disappear, it just makes everyone very good at masking or self medicating.

Law enforcement operates in a position where they “can’t lose” an encounter. This is a major cause of rapid and unnecessary escalation with LEOs and the civilians they’ve stopped.

I’m from Sacramento and I know of people who worked at Sircles. It’s comically mismanaged and run by a comic book villian.

Not every restaurant can handle the deferred payout either. Their business is based on receiving payment at the time of service. The restaurant model operates on razor thin margins, and they don’t buy their food on net 30 terms, but they have to absorb costs as if they do.

There are other issues, but this setup looks a lot like paying the mafia due to the imbalance of power.

From the perspective of the publications, it’s fear-mongering which makes clicks.

Out of control AI is a common sci-fi trope because it’s a convenient allegory for the uncaring systems that determine the quality or continuation of human life.

Of course, investors are loving this because there is no such thing as bad press.

> Why bother?

Because knowing about the presence of a condition is better than not. Depending on the severity, untreated ADHD during the years of life where a child begins to establish good study habits, management of the condition, and other tools that work for them, can lead to issue down the road and into adulthood. We have the ability to address conditions like dyscalcula with little interventions to help the student be successful.

Just because something is imperfect doesn’t mean it should disregarded completely if the benefits (academic, social, and career success) outweigh the drawbacks of being untreated. The stigma argument is just FUD and letting that take over decision making for the well-being of a child is a bad path to go down.

There are often, unknown to the parent, invisible scars that the child with a non-neurotypical condition will carry for the of their life after having found out about a condition they’ve had since birth and was not addressed during the most critical time of their life when early treatment could have greatly reduced the harm caused by this disorder.

It’s still a currently-in-use acronym/term that a sufficiently large tech company could conceivably be using both meanings concurrently. This causes confusion and muddies the water of a general web search experience.

Not the same situation, but I remember when “Electron” was called “Atom Shell” because it was built for the (now defunct) text editor by the same name. For the longest time, I had an unsubstantiated thought that it was a new Unix shell that was based around a text editor somehow (yes, dumb). In hindsight, they just had named this cleverly to reference the various layers or shells of electrons orbiting atomic nuclei, thus the eventual name of Electron.

On the other hand, a wireless technology standard is very different than a known mathematical technique that likely predates the wireless meaning anyway.

> SSRI use has skyrocketed, and multiple meta-analyses have confirmed that they lead to an increase in suicidal thoughts and behavior when used by children and adolescents.

The prevailing wisdom on this is that many people suffering major depression won’t even have the motivation to go through with suicide. Once the depression has begun to be treated, certain executive functions start to amplify giving sufferers newfound task salience and resolve to go through with it. The problem is that all the symptoms of depression take far longer to subside with consistent SSRI/SNRI usage as prescribed. These drugs take on average 90 days to reach their full effectiveness but not everything happens at once during this adjustment. Along the way, you do reach a strange state of: “well I’m still depressed but I feel empowered to do something about it now.”

Part of being a nonprofit is that instead of being obligated to drive profits to investors, you must carry out the focus of your mission statement.

Money is fuel. It should not ever become such a constraining resource and saying they can get by with less is trivializing the way they conduct operations and the impact the are obligated to peruse.

I don’t see this argument being made as it relates to for-profit companies. Is a nonprofit unworthy of fundraising because they have “enough” already? Who defines that? Are they not worthy because they bring value to society rather than individual shareholders? Nonprofits still operate as businesses and they also want to see growth. I’m not sure how any reasonable person would see a problem with that.

I’ve worked a lot with nonprofits. Having a pool of static funds available is not indicative of sustainability. If you are asking for funds only when you are running out, it is far too late for you.
