I imagine that people at youtube are very aware of this, and put an effort into distinguishing ``real'' view (consistent demographic/trusted referer) and ``fake'' (spammy/ black hat SEO) views.
First off, they mention that when the initial design decision was made, a similar operation cost ~$160, which is tenable for an operation that only happens once in a while. This is a real problem that GAE needs to solve.
Finally, their problem doesn't seem to be that they need arbitrary precision, its that they seem to need fast location centric queries of a large database.
Geoboxes allow you to solve this problem correctly (and quickly), returning the results in the database that are closest to you. Matching on a geohash can end up serving the incorrect data unless you resort to hacks involving a number of queries.
Except that it is extremely useful as a powerful calculator for students and professionals doing technical things, and in the process of being very handy teaches people mathematica notation. Just because it's not necessarily aimed at the average person doesn't mean its not aimed at anyone.
I expect Wolfram alpha has done a lot to drive sales of mathematica.
If you are referring to Africa, there's a good reason multinational corporations aren't opening up shop.
Namely, the multinational corporations of the 1880's and on made such a mess of things that many of the countries now have very little infrastructure and spigot economies where multiple parties jockey for control of the natural resource(s) and hence power in the country.
Barring some sort of radical change, this situation isn't changing any time soon for most places.
The irony is (excepting south Africa and Egypt which have their own histories), the only stable countries where companies might be able to set up shop are the ones with no natural resources, because there's not much to fight over.
Meh... what I've always gotten out of stuff about Fibonacci numbers is that it's pretty amazing that a lot of disparate things in nature seem to arrive at similar patterns because very different situations end up having similar sorts of constraints.
The fact that the Fibonacci sequence doesn't explain the mechanism is kinda the beauty of the thing.
Sure people take it too far, or misinterpret it and what not... but that doesn't stop this article from being a little silly.
