This article is a dog whistle for right-wing behaviour and is quite frankly problematic, starting with this quip in the first paragraph which sets the stage: "[...] instead of letting algorithms and machine learning decide what is good for you."
We've spent a good twenty years now, and longer really, building the infrastructure to ensure that when it comes to the World Wide Web, FAAMNG+ companies - not just restricted to US-centric ones but globally really - can make sure that the things you see, and the way the algorithms work, are done in a way that is good for you.
I used to be against mass surveillance, logging everything, but seeing this kind of an article in 2021 sends shivers up my spine. I'm quite worried. Is this what we should look into next?
So this is interesting, because yesterday some bloke had a thread on HN around how his FAANG mates are of the subpar IQ sort and he wasn't happy with that arrangement.
So then, which cabal in Google would be responsible for coordinating a multinational hostile takeover attempt, and how many standard deviations are we talking about here? Do they have a department to themselves? "Mergers, Acquisitions & Hostile Takeovers." Has a nice ring to it. I wonder if the lad should apply for a transfer.
>Do you ever get tired of being lied to? According to this act, America will use the withholding of economic aid and the “voice” of the United States government to protect Afghan women. If the Taliban abuses those women, America will ensure that the militants are brought “to justice.”
My my. The Atlantic grew a spine at last. Maybe NYT will follow? (yeah right)
I don't know the exact one to be honest - it's one of the 15+ minute ones where he has a caller and he takes apart why their expectations are over the top and they should reconsider. He lists statistics like, so-and-so % of black men earn less than $X, so-and-so % of black men are imprisoned, and so on. Probably one of the ones that expects a $500k/yr guy.
For anyone who hasn't watched his YT vids, take 30 min and go through some of his shorter clips. It's quite interesting what the expectations out there are.
Started watching some of his videos. Very interesting and, in earnest, doesn't seem to be any different in other communities. Amplified in some ways in particular because he brings up the incarceration rates.
