OK willdo. I really gave up my account to avoid HN addiction but some times like over the winter break I can't help myself.

Poland has an authoritarian govt now.

They started by sacking the supreme court and installing its own judges https://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/europe/new-polish-regi...

Last independent newspapers were bought by state owned Gas Station chain. https://www.dw.com/en/poland-state-run-oil-company-buys-lead...

The only independent new TV channel was going to get shut down but recently had a last minute veto. https://variety.com/2021/tv/global/discovery-poland-media-bi...

It defies EU who says member countries must have EU law supremacy https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/19/europe/eu-poland-rule-of-law-...

They regularly have parliamentary votes late at night when only the PiS party turns up.

They give a lot of money to the church who then praise the party during services.

Its not a real democracy any more.

Thanks - yes I could, however I was hoping to skip that and go straight to a junior role. I see grads hired for such things all the same, I guess its impossible once you're not young any more.

Yeah, the problem is I want to change areas. Despite an apparent desperate shortage of engineers I'm having trouble getting a job that isn't near-identical to the one I have now. I'd like to do data science or web front ends or something for a change but I'm finding it very difficult to be taken seriously. Its frustrating when I see clueless people getting entry level roles which I could do much easier.

> This gives you a ton of “time in the market” and they generally appreciate quite significantly if you’ve picked a good company.

I think you can rephrase that to in this stock market boom tech market stocks are appreciated to crazy high levels. It wont happen again in the next decade.

FB is just another ad selling company. If you have an account it helps them know about you, if you dont have an account it makes sense they'll still have a profile for you.

I'm surprised its so hard to find cheap low powered laptops with big screens and a good keyboard. Usually big screens means GPU and high end components. Esp in this era of cloud computing I only need a browser and a terminal on a 16+ in screen. I'd love a MacBook air with a big screen, why is it so hard?

Flying in America is horrible with all the people bringing huge bags into the cabin. Everyone is fighting to get on first with their massive luggage banging around. I wish they'd enforce a 20lb weight limit like in Europe.

I try to have IP6 only addresses as it helps with port scanning. I'd think it'd be more common.

Are there any good FANG size companies? Amazon sucks, Facebook is unethical as most Social Media and ad selling. Crypto is a scam. It seems everyone is hiring but I struggle to find a good company to work for. Google perhaps?

Design Patterns - I think there are a few obvious ones like Singleton and Bridge, a few non-trivial like Strategy and the rest are just historic artifacts for interviews

I spent a year on LC to get a fang job, I actually felt it helped me improve my short-game programming skills. The problem was I then started applying for regular jobs who didn't care about LC so much and I was failing on system design, experience with frameworks etc. I spent so much time on LC I was neglecting to keep up on cool tech. So now I'm doing that. Its kinda weird being programmer for 20 years in a market where everyone is "desperate" to find programmers yet I'm struggling to get a 200k+ job. Yeah I haven't gone for regular corporate jobs yet but looks like I'll end up in that end of the pool.
