Id say its dying because many of us do not donate some amount of money? and or support to the authors .

Every time I see a big whiny post that uses the word "we" to indiscriminately paint an entire community I immediately get the feeling the "we" actually means "me."

Exactly. And this is only possible because "someone" made their work available for free.
This is not new. "Communes" have always had this problem. No one has ever found a solution that didn't involve forced labor. Study history and human nature and quit feigning surprise.
