Thanks to a helpful comment, I discovered after 10 years that

> i can't believe i'm writing a reply to a guy whose name is broken spanish for 'brando, the little fuck'. (literally. there isn't an alternative interpretation.)

Cool, I had no idea.

I love the summary done by https://hn-wrapped.kadoa.com/BrandoElFollito?share

Profile Summary A French ex-physicist turned tech enthusiast who brings a unique European perspective to discussions. Maintains a substantial self-hosted infrastructure while regularly contributing insights on topics ranging from quantum mechanics to cooking. Known for pragmatic approaches to technology and occasional cultural observations about France.

Roast Claims to be French but hasn't mentioned surrendering once - suspicious! Has a PhD in physics but still can't figure out why YAML indentation is important Watches hoof trimming videos despite seeing a real cow only twice - peak urban programmer moment

(the mention about France was mean, though)

Aaaaaand, a wrap of the wrap! https://hn-wrapped.kadoa.com/BrandoElFollito?share

Noether theorem is one of the nicest ones to derive (together with Maxwell equations). There is such an elegance to go from the axions to the result.

I still have a trauma associated with this, though, because it popped out in one exam and I could see the pages in my notes where it was derived but they were quite blank.

> But Poland and Portugal, and all other countries, send their prime minister

Yes, but what does it have to do with the original point about countries with real power presidents?
BrandoElFollito

Out of my head: Poland, Checkia, Cyprus, Portugal, Romania -- all these have real presidents.

Germany and Italy are exceptions, not the rule
BrandoElFollito

No because we know that we have (in France) a president, a prime minister and ministers.

We know what they are in charge of (for the basic ministries), everyone knows who the president is, a lot who the PM is, and nobody knows the current ministers. But we know their jobs. They also refer to stuff which impacts us on a daiky basis.

The EU as a governing body is a mystery. Not only there are pieces that has almost the same name but are different things, they function in a remote world that does not interfere with ours. Like the UN.

It's not. The EU for us Europeans is a vague institution, very far from our everyday lives.

It is a great analogy even for someone from Europe.

In (4), though, I do not get the French exception. There are many countries in Europe with a president and a prime minister

Or not. I depends on the country and its tax system.

I have this for years, as a google docs shared with some people and a printout.

This is basic decency for the ones that remain and taboos should not be a reason to not do this.

It is a how to on hiw to connect yo my data, including butwarden (where the important logins are shared anyway), all banks, investment companies etc.

I also added a section on how to dumb down my smart home, but this is a niche case.

I self host gitea for my personal-personal projects, the ones nobody will ever see.

For the personal-opensource ones, I am on Github because this is where everyone is when I want to share/collaborate etc

"Why do you want to work here" can be insightful.

I like to be asked this because I can for one tell the truth, and then see how the interviewer responds (when this is at an advanced stage of the process, with real people)

I don't get the chart with the tropical nights.

It is not as if there was a heat dome that is specifically sitting on the cities. It is more because the cities are so bad in heat control that they get tropical night via inertia.

As an ex-physicist, pi^2 is 10. Like g.

I get it that this is a nice calculation with the Zeta function and everything, but 3 and a small something squared will be near 10 so it is 10.

The Trump US gave us (Europeans) the kick in the bottom we needed to get the head from the sand.

Like never we delibrate specifically on non-US solutions (objectively great) because we realized we are neck deep in US dependence. It is not that it was not known before, we just did not feel the threat.

This is why EU companies niw look at our own solution (which are late and will probably suffer from the incompetence and mess of the EU institutions) but another key playet is round the corner, namely China.

Trump managed to make us look elsewhere than the US. Thanks for that.

With what?? Please understand that all countries are not like yours. In France this will happen in 2047 if all planets are aligned (they won't be)

As an ex-Motorolan (1998-2008), I sometimes look at what remains of the big mighty company and there is not much.

Here in Europe it is even less, at least in the US you see the umpires (or somebody else, not sure as I fo not know baseball) with their half-headsets with the Motorola logo.

It is a shame, I liked this company very much.

I traveled yo the US maybe 50 times, for different reasons (from Europe or Asia).

I never felt welcome. The only country I felt the same was Russia, and to some much smaller extent - China.

Journals are scams, sustained by scientists. All this paid by our taxes.

Scientists decided that other scientists will be ranked by coolness (where they publish). And that this is a strict process. Except when the scientist is a celebrity, such as Benaventiste and his water memory. Too cool to reject.

Hopefully this will change as information gets more and more decentralized.

Birth in humans is not a "extremely biologically conserved process". Women bodies are not ready for the size of head of the baby.

Compare this to cows or horses - where the baby is of sizeable size, but goes statistically smoothly.
