It’s a fantastic read, and with his sense of recall being so strong it provides a lot of detail you other might not get. He does say in the end he might have made it a bit more positive than some of the moments may have actually been, but I’ve not seen any of the other people from those times contradict what he’s said.

I also found that Shareware Heroes by Richard Moss was a good, if more general, accompaniment.

Changing the policy is not a complete u-turn on the policy. The trust is gone.

I’ve truly found that (in increasing order of cost) strength training, mixing up input device when using a computer to give other muscles a chance, and more recently getting a motorised standing desk to be great helps in working against tendinitis. Some days are better than others, but those should good days never be seen as a reason to drop all techniques against that numbing feeling in the arm.

I do wonder how many interviewers would end up asking if the candidate is hallucinating thanks to ChatGPT.

Reads exactly like that. Tighten the screws on the original benefits of working for them (either remote first or having transitioned to remote) and if the employee doesn’t leave you win because they’re in office. If they do, well, it doesn’t look as bad as another notch in the layoff tally because they jumped first.

I really have to give a shout out to NBA Jam by Reyan Ali[1]. It was a fun ride looking at the development of not just the game(s), but the teams and companies around them. [1] https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36597600-nba-jam

Understandable. Turning its original intention into a money-making exercise is going to be a mess. Who is going to bother checking that Celeb123 is a fake with Twitter Blue when that individual validation requires extra click through when the OG setup was fine? Maybe another icon will solve it.

Good. I've noticed more job opportunities that stress a remote(/hybrid) nature the past couple of months, and I greatly appreciate it. As long as there are options for those who need them (being in the office because the home situation is too distracting vs needing to WFH because someone's coming to fix a pipe), I think it works.

Employees have shown they get the work done (and are working more hours with the lack of a commute + water cooler time which is its own issue). There are reasons that being on-site job necessary of course, but if the only one is the employer is paranoid and wants to hover over their employees, that says more about them.

Granted, all the landlords who have or are building massive office blocks might be in trouble, but frankly they can deal with it.
