I'm honestly not sure but I'm also not sure we have ever seen a nuclear power with its back against the wall to this degree have we? I'm not trying to make people worried it's just something I personally worry about.

Is anyone at all worried about Russia retaliating directly against America for all this success? The U.S. media loves gloating about this kind of stuff but it seems gratuitous at best.

I had poor high school grades and was formally kicked out of my first community college for poor grades. Went into the work force, eventually went back to school at a different community college, and now have an ivy league degree. Sometimes the timing is just off or there are external factors that have nothing to do with your raw ability.

Nice morale booster after the layoffs from the world's 2nd largest company in terms of market cap. Are any other big tech companies doing this?

I mean, presumably we have more than just the FBI to address nation states' hackers so I'm not sure what the comparison here is meant to convey. What percentage of our gigantic military budget is already allocated to address this?

I know this is besides the point and maybe I'm just getting older, but the gameplay seems particularly disturbing in way that it didn't 10 years ago. I guess that's to be expected given the nature of art.

Will never choose to have my free will refashioned in the image of Meta if only because of statements like this.

Did I read this article wrong? Are hands a metaphor for something? A lot of people can't and/or eventually won't be able to use their hands. This was as true in 2011 as it is now.

I know next to nothing about structural engineering but was the plan always to let it crumble? Or was it architected in such a way that regular maintenance was always too costly? Makes me wonder about all these large skyscrapers we have in the U.S..

100%. No particular horror stories just tons of time lost and frustrating dependency issues. Studying Swift now to go native.

Thanks! Maybe this will help fill the void in my life after The Expanse ends.

Reading this in contrast to the “anti-mimetic” article posted recently is great. It highlights a kind of price you can pay for a lack of acquiescence to established norms. Nothing terribly dramatic, just a kind of indifference reflected back at you.

Mimetic theory, while not entirely complete, seems to cover the common impulse behind dominating trends. Whether it accounts for the initial spark of “anti” I guess is another question.

Sure, revel in some sense of freedom for being a “contrarian.” But recognize the naïveté in thinking this has any constructive meaning in our time.

Same! Commander nights at my local LGS have quickly become the highlights of my week. Scryfall has also become my most frequented website next to hn.

Recently parlayed all of my 1st edition Pokémon cards into Magic cards so I could play at local stores. Been a great way to meet new people in a safe way during the pandemic and to collect.

Magic: The Gathering. It doesn’t involve screens and it’s still largely reliant on players supporting local business. Multiple birds with one stone.

I suspect it was a mix of a couple things. Here’s how it went: 1. I exhausted myself to a fair degree when I first swam out in order to get past the point at which the waves were breaking. Once I was in a calm area I began to rest and catch my breath. 2. I began to feel what I can only describe as a slight panic attack when I noticed that the current was behaving slightly like a rip (a current pushing away from the shore). 3. The cold temp of the water mixed with the newfound anxiety and my exhaustion began to make me feel shorter and shorter of breath. 4. At this point I was in full panic mode and started using all of my energy to get back to the shore or at least to the point at which the waves were breaking to carry me in.

So I think in general you could categorize it as an inexperienced swimmer because I couldn’t spot the rip from the shore but I don’t think its always so obvious since even a small one could carry you away.

As someone who recently almost drowned a couple weeks ago this article is spookily accurate. I was surprised how indifferent everyone on the shore was when a wave finally coughed me up onto the sand. My only assumption, post stress headache, was that it just didn’t look like I was drowning.

There are copious amounts of examples showing how Nature is attracted to symmetry(a form of beauty). Why wouldn't we use this is evidence as a heuristic?
