I think that's a bit silly to say. We don't know how the web would have evolved without these languages, but it's pretty evident that modern web development has had some sizable influences on programming in general, and it wouldn't have happened without it's humble beginnings.

I also suggest both languages have evolved quite a bit since. Between these, though, I think modern JS has had the most impact. This can mostly be attributed to the node community, with a great deal of insights from ruby.

Things like async patterns and quality package management have changed our standards for what we expect out of modern languages, despite the coerson based parlor tricks chuckled at by those who don't use the language.

PHP, on the other hand, is still a templating language that lives and dies in a request response cycle.

I don't understand the websocket protocol issue. The connection is not the http(s) protocol beyond the upgrade - allowing the use of http or https here is misleading, no? Is using a turnary or having a value other than what the current page is navigated to so terrible? I'm glad their doing this work at normalizing the browsers. I just find that one a bit low priority if it merits a change at all.

It's great for influencers and beginners because of the ability to copy and paste examples plus the hype. The moment you put a scenario where there is no boilerplate available on the table, the utility of tailwind goes out the window.

As for Htmx, it's nothing new. I don't dislike it, but comparing it to web frameworks like React is missing the point. A lot of what it gives you (or doesn't) can already be achieved with a bit of vanilla js and, if you're feeling fancy, jQuery. Advocating for it as a replacement for something like React is sort of like recommending a bicycle to someone who drives. Yeah, it has its place, but it doesn't replace the utility of the car. Insisting it does indicate you don't know much about cars - or maybe bikes.

Anyway htmx uncomfortably reminds me of the MVC servers we use to write 15 years ago where the frontend always ended up being an unreadable unmaintainable mess after a few years because the frontend was treated as a random collection of assets for views to use.

Yes, if they require me to use a specific os, or install software to observe me, I won't take the job. Do you want me to build you awesome software? You need to let me use the tools of my choice. Full stop.

I thought the game "I know you are, but what am I" was for kids. This hateful obsession with Elon Musk is inherently political, I didn't bring that to this discussion.

Yeah, of course. I'm interested in what is true, not retorical games meant to focus public resentment in order to capture political power.

So were Germany's industries when they lost the second world war after trying to exterminate the Jews. This is the fault of Hamas, just like what happened to Germans was the fault of the Nazis.

This is why I never use google products for anything mission critical. They cancel all sorts of projects, even when it's against their business interests (arguably). From the outside these projects seem more like pawns for executive advancement rather than products they care about, let alone their customers.

I absolutely cannot wait for this to land. it's been a long time. it's going to make Rust much more approachable to new developers, and it's going to make the lives of existing Rust developers much less tedious.

You all are cringe. Anyone working in tech knows that most marketing sites are made by third parties, likely some WordPress shop. The hatred for Elon on this site is ridiculous.

No sorry, as someone who has worked a lot of startups and helped build companies when they were counting pennies prior to the growth phase, the idea that they are entitled to any of this is a joke, especially in a large corporation where the majority staff aren't putting in nights. Once a team starts to deliver, and you actually have a product that people are buying and profits are good, by all means get the beer taps and yoga mats *but* for the team that did nights for 3 years. Not for rent seeking staff that infest these large corporations. These sorts of perks were largely to thank the staff for making huge sacrifices to get the product delivered, and now for some reason people just expect it. Twitter on the other hand had taken on a massive roster of staff, and was never cash positive.

In regards to a pay cut, I'm not moved by that argument. The pay at Twitter was already very competitive, and it seems very likely that people weren't doing a whole lot of work.

As for who the employer's wealth, I don't think that should have anything to do with how staff are compensated. The employer's personal wealth doesn't have anything to do with the value of an employer's labor, which is the only thing that matters when evaluating if compensation is fair. If you're factoring that in then there may be elements of resentment and/or jealousy at play. You should get compensated for the value you produce, full stop.

Absolute cringe. I'm not going to say I don't like these sorts of perks, but it shouldn't be considered a norm. If your team works nights to ship product, spends a lot of extra time in the office, sure it makes sense that these benefits are offered, but unless it's in your employment contract, your not entitled to them, and honestly, when staff that work regular 9 to 5 easy does it style days get the same perks as the staff working 20 extra hours a week it's a slap in the face to those who worked for it.

I agree not much has happened with the boring company or the hyperloop stuff, and i dont see them going anywhere yet either. But saying Tesla are a scam is unhinged. In a lot of cities a good portion of cars on the road are Teslas. Here in Vancouver it's about as common as a civic. Hundreds of thousands of regular people love their teslas. This is no small feat either. For decades it was commonly believed that electric cars were silly and wouldn't work as an alternative to combustion cars. Telsa is solely responsible for proving those assumptions wrong, and the existing car companies are now having to compete.

In regards to the offer of free service to Ukrane. Thousands of base stations were given for free to the Ukrainian forces, but the demand was way higher than anticipated to the point of being punitive. So when the Pentagon most likey has a budget for this sort of thing, why would you not ask for them to cover cost? Just in this critisim alone there's an interesting point, starlink works and is high demand.

Love him or hate him, despite the fact that he talks off the cuff and doesn't always deliver, has as delivered several times in very big ways. Even if you think somehow other people's brilliance are behind the success of these achievement, you still have to contend with the fact that he has been in leadership at several companies that have completely changed their industry's for the better. Why is Musk at the helm for each of these game changing achievements? Low orbit high speed satellite internet with thousands of satellites, rockets with resusable landing boosters, a very functional and reliable ISS resupply mission, a car company that survived through a financial collapse and has proven the viability of mass production general purpose long range vehicles. Not everything he touches turns to gold, but enough of it is that it needs to be taken seriously.

You can dislike him, he is wacky, but these are facts. Not recognizing these things makes it plain that these criticisms are in bad faith or are based on ignorance.

Thunderf00t jumped the shark years ago. He has a most erect hate boner for Elon I've ever seen. He was also saying for a long time that spacex would never succeed nor starlink. You can hate the man, hell you can even accurately point out that he has a habit of taking a lot of shit, but he has delivered time and time again.
