You could say the same about "Chromebooks" -- but that doesn't matter anymore. Thanks to Chromebooks dominating schools and Google's general ubiquity, almost everyone knows what Chrome is if you've used a computer in the past decade.

The only market who wouldn't know is the same crowd that would never use a smart TV anyway.

> The ironic part of all of this is that while the EU may be forcing Apple into supporting RCS to fix the situation, Google has resisted every effort to extend RCS to their own Voice platform.

Google Voice has been in maintenance mode for years. It's unlikely that Google resisted adding RCS, but rather there's been no effort to actually do it.

They're playing the long game. Apple wants market usage to build bargaining power with the banks. They saw how the original Google Wallet was blocked from adoption because of control by the carriers and banks. Remember ISIS Mobile Wallet? (That name aged terribly..)

We saw how it took 10+ years and a dominating market position for Apple to show their claws with controlling 3rd parties with the App Store. Make no doubt that once a significant portion of the market uses Apple hardware or services for transactions, that they will want control and a cut of the transaction.

Notice how they say: partner-enabled iOS app

This means Apple has to endorse each 3rd party, and they remain under Apple's control just like app developers.

No one denies Facebook makes good products. It’s the egregious and intentional abuse of trust and privacy, with an act now and apologize later mentality that everyone hates. And rightfully so.

Every time I feel secretly embarrassed for running my small projects on a simple cloud VPS VM, an article like this comes along and restores faith in my decision to not over-engineer things.

This has come up on HN before, and it's a great read - "You are not Google": https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19576092

Why is JavaScript even allowed in ads? Why can’t they be limited to images, text, and/or looping HTML5 videos?

Could you imagine if cable companies could control your Smart TV when showing ads and collect data about your viewing habits?

A minority of us have been saying this for years, WHEN will the tech industry cry loud enough for change?

Ad blockers block specific things - NoScript blocks all JS. It’s really not an acceptable alternative.

I agree that the idea of a sandbox and Mac App Store is still a vision worth continuing. The problem is that like macOS itself, it seems to have been sidelined for the past few years in favor of iOS and other endeavors.

The performance and limitations can definitely be improved, if not eliminated, if Apple focused on it. The question is: Will they?
