On the other hand, sometimes cutting the cable is at least as dangerous as causing the aircraft to crash, for instance https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_Cavalese_cable_car_crash

The only safe system is for aircraft to avoid wires.

Current SFDC software engineer - this is just cover for a widespread engineering hiring freeze since the layoffs in January 2023. There's a ton of pressure to control costs after the near shareholder revolt that caused the layoffs.

The public nature of the announcement is certainly marketing for our AI offerings as well, but at this point I think most engineers are just worried there will be additional layoffs, in the event management cannibalizes product for short term stock gains again.

NYT's political coverage has been extremely poor this year, with very obvious editorial control preventing negative coverage of Trump.

It's not obvious to me they have a bias here, but given the clear systemic issues in other reporting it's reasonable to bring a skeptical view to their own reporting.

I had an MRI in February and specifically asked about my wedding ring, the tech said it wasn't an issue. We didn't discuss composition or any other details.

Phone numbers are initially assigned geographically but people generally take their phone number with them as they move.

Yes to the extent they're able.

This article is a pretty good overview of the situation across Las Vegas that night: https://www.facs.org/for-medical-professionals/news-publicat...

In short, every hospital was overwhelmed, but Sunrise was the closest to the shooting so got the most overflow.

People would just have called it "ov" and moved on. Look around the tech ecosystem, lots of thriving projects with stupid names.

> Read the linked PDF from the CIA FFS. Its a fun theory and that has multiple articles linked from the 80s.

Readers should note that while the declassification source is the CIA, this was simply a note from a retired Army Lt. General pitching space related projects from a private think tank. He had no insider knowledge or intelligence at the time, which is why this whole memo can be declassified - it's pure speculation.

Fortunately for us, we don't need to delve into speculation, because Challenger had an extremely robust and well documented investigation process which established a clear cause, which was very much not Soviet malfeasance.

> My understanding is that tasers are AC, thus involuntary movements will be back and forth rather than just in one direction.

Tasers AC output is at low frequency but still significantly faster than human muscles can move, if you watch any video of a tase you'll see it causes the victim's muscles to seize up and not oscillate.

Fred Noonan was hired as the navigator specifically for this leg of the flight because of his navigation skills, which he proved by establishing Pan Am's transpacific routes, so it's not obvious to me why a navigational error would rest on Earhart's lack of skills in that area.

No computer (device), but definitely a computer (person who computes) the location of the plane and destination in a formula that relies on the correct date for accurate long distance navigation.

Because these employees are in California, Google is required to give 60 days notice of termination. Typically in big tech layoffs this is done as paid garden leave.

You're conflating the civil and criminal judicial systems when the reality is they're quite separate, and defamation has its own special corner of the civil realm where plaintiffs have a very steep hill to climb.

$10k means very different things to people of different socioeconomic statuses, but the new owner took a rinsing to keep this dog alive - german shepherd puppies from almost all breeders cost less than $5k.

Likely the vet simply knew someone with deep enough pockets who loves dogs and was willing to take one for a well above market fee. It doesn't seem unethical to me that person only wants to save dogs they own.

I think your guess here is pretty much spot on.

TFA links another article explaining the $10,000 bill is a combination of $3,000 of completed tests the original owner had already paid, the surgical procedure, and aftercare costs.

I work at a large SF based SaaS, there's so much money in that space the company spun up a team to build an air gapped version of our product for restricted networks.

It's definitely much slower than the private sector, but if the agencies decide they have a use case, they'll throw money at it until it works in house.

That may have been its critical reception but the game was wildly profitable for CDPR: https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2021/04/17/cyberpunk-...

> I assume that means that you will be using their lawyers rather than your own (which they have in house and so are cheaper to use than the ones that bill you, the would be defendant by the hour).

Litigation is almost universally outsourced, especially for cases where damages might be large, even by companies like Microsoft.

The point is just to lower the resistance to adoption that legal risk causes.

As an egregious google maps power user, these are the ones that bother me:

1. Offline maps don't actually download all the destinations in the mapped area

2. Google maps is bad at displaying densely packed businesses - this is an issue online as well

3. No offline bike or transit directions

These are the 3 I checked immediately in organic maps, and all work significantly better there.

I think your point is reasonable, but I'm also a very high income person who thinks nothing of buying data plans when traveling internationally and has an unlimited plan in the US. I routinely meet people while traveling who have the opposite set of financial priorities, organic maps is probably a great choice for them.
