when you already have a large percentage of the online user base you are going to have to
1) wait for that underlying user base to grow
2) offer something new to capture people you dont have with your current product
They have reached the point where its a lot easier to lose someone then gain someone. I dont think its societal impact ... its people getting older and dropping off while at the same time its really hard to replenish that use base when already have so many of the young people already on your site.
So maybe they need to understand user rentention vs aging , I think that would be a place to look, societal impact ... no one uses or drops a product becuase of societal impact.
How many diamonds and how many electronics or clothes do we use that have a dubious labor practices. Its the product quality that speaks loudest.
Well that message is clouded in vague phrases ... not that he cant give examples, but in general its sophist, i guessing this technique allows you engage with a broader audience. I dont think he uses it for lack of evidence, instead he uses it so he can invoke emotions to several different people at one.
I understand criticizing it , as its seen as cunning trick, not strait speak. In reality all good speakers use it, and criticizing it is just jealously usually. Unless you're Orwell and then you would denounce the use of it entirely.
those are concerns of every project , we will see if timescale is different
But is it good enough , as a product it needs to prove to me its good enough to switch. Many people dont need a specific time database. Many people have created solutions on top of their current database.
We have hadoop and other post processors that can allow us to off load old data but raise features to the user to get data in the past.
Is this better? And how much more does it cost? Oracle didnt get successful becuase people couldnt store data before them. They were successful becuase it became a need: You have a DB solution or you dont and if you dont you cant be secure in your "data assets" (Martin Fowler talks about this).
So if I dont have a Time database ... what cant I do? Who is going to not do business with me unless I have a time db? I hope you have some good enterprise friends.
unless you pass an object ..... then it is its partial pass by reference. Is HN the place to get wrong information, this is an example of what is going on here. How is this not completely downvoted out of oblivion
hes basing it on evidence ... weather its easy or not (its an opinion, im not sure what the ease or difficulty of the statment matters) it seems accurate. Maybe some counter evidence like your knowledge of how hard he/the team works?
They try they failed ... and op is suggesting get some wins under your belt first. I dont things hes "acting hurt". You are acting hurt, and taking a criticism personally instead of for what it is. A reasonable statement.
This makes me see why the project failed ... surrounded by yes men that cant see the flaw and are focused on things like "how many people use it" rather than "why would anyone pay for this"
no we dont ... people became good programmers with the tools we have ... actually people become good programers inspite of the tools (they build the tools with the languages and ide's they have)
Im not trying to lower the bar ... I want something better than these hacker rank games challenge site that distinguish the good from the bad
if you can become good with what we have now, you are not good, you need to spend time and practice
if you need a tool to become good , then what do you call the guys that are good anyways?
Programming is not ment to be easy its a very deep and very broad profession
Medicine is not easy , and you need certs
I go the opposite route , we need more certs in programming , im not worried about the script kiddies who cant hold more than 2 states in their mind. I want to make it harder to enter programming so I dont have to reteach people cs ideas when they graduate from hacker rank.
I want quality , not quantity from my programmers. Its not flipping burgers ... but thats exactly what these 6 week courses are touting
Its because the bay area needs a cheeper work force , it cant afford the college grads any more.
Im not a rocket ship im a human , a smart one that is to be respected and not objectified. Ill work they way I want to work , if the results are not to your liking , hire someone else. Go find someone else to be your "rocket ship."
we cant come together on a frontend framework ... there are so many important things we do not agree on, programmers are very particular people , what is great for one , is crap for another.
We are also anti group think, i dont want to be part of a frat , or a group or a union and I dont want to pay union dues. Unlike actors we are people that can think for ourselves and we like to be atonomous. Think of the idea of the 10x'er ... Even if you were a 3x'er wouldnt you not want to be mixed with a group of shitters ...
basically programmers is a broad spectrum that many outside and some inside the industry really dont grasp ... hence why you say "or what ever term you'd prefer to be called'
I prefer to be called employed , with clear terms that my employer enforces ... you can take your bureaucratic , middle man bs and shove it.
Thats my opinion on unions , not you personally ... i just hate unions and all bureaucratic liberal constructs, its always a waste and hurts the hardest working becomes a corrupt group.
work life balance is double speak for : your life is your work
an extreme cynical view , but that is the beauty of it , its hidden in plain sight.
How can a company give indefinite vacation, only if it hires and prevays a culture of overwork? The type of people hired will never take that vacation.
Im not right , but im not wrong. The point is "work life balance" and "unlimited vacation" are not clear ideas on the reality of the environments and for some they can be a rose colored glass over the true experience.
SV is very much the benevolent dictator ... giving you everything you could ask for , just be its slave.
Can a slave only be a slave for 10 years and leave? Can a job that pays over 6 figures feel like slavery?
I answer yes to the latter. You are payed well , but you are not respected as a developer. This will only change when we become the heads of our industry and not the tools to be used by money men.
I disagree. I am not responsible for others feelings. There should be clear rules of conduct at any job and a clear process of enforcement. This make the situation fair and certain.
One easy rule is that if someone says "Only talk to me about work." then the other person has to respect it. No forcing of social acceptance , no shaming the other to believe what you believe, just focus on what you were hired for. This is a standard taught to many managers to keep the company out of harassment issues , its very robotic unemotional but its clear and will allow different groups to work together as long as this rule is enforced.
Basically we should not have to worry about a toxic culture because you should not be forced into one when you work. You should just be able to work and separate yourself from your task in any emotional way.

you couldnt pass this bill becuase liberals didnt want it , because liberals dont want to see this kind of legislation. You have it now becuase liberals have less stopping power.
why not just deploy .... the only thing a CI system does is run a bunch of scripts ... build a bash script and deploy by hand.
Theres an 80/20 rule here, you can get 80% of CI features in 20% of the script you create
Also if you turn down your deployment cycle (once a day, twice a week , etc) you will lessen the problem of lack of a tool , until you find one
CI for me has always been about deployment organization and automation. Its ok to have a bug be fixed by end of day, it doesnt have to be deployed in 15 mins.
you sir , work at a big tech company. Not a startup ... sf startups are like frats, there is hazing , there is partying , there are cliques ... I got away from that. I didnt want to be part of the company trips where people have go to hookup. I just want to code and go home.
