that is not that either though or is it? i mean say i found my vehicle on some platform for sale and then located it with their service, now what? i call the cops i suppose, i dont see how this is much different to calling them once they agreed to meet somewhere.

If a thief is selling your stolen car, would that not be very easy to locate by showing interest in buying it? Am I missing something?

> it’s more than that. it’s any device that can present itself as a possible base station.

can you elaborate on this a bit? what devices are able to to present themselves as possible base stations? do i need any form of entitlement to participate in the network or not? From past encounters with SS7 and its, uhm, capabilities, it seemed the hardest part would be getting access to the network, albeit not hard really, it sounds like you were hinting at possibly gaining access by participating in the network without any official entitlement, by posing as a base station.

systemd-networkd keeps open that kind of socket for LLDP but apparently not for the DHCP client code. wpa_supplicant also keeps open this type of socket on my local system. and the dhcpd daemons on my routers have some of those too for each interface...

i wonder if the slow path here could be avoided by using separate network namespaces in a way these sockets don't even get to see the packets...

I respect your choice and would likely do the same now and then. However, i think it could be beneficial if publishers realize DRM free books get pirated less or even bought more often :)

I said publishers but i am not sure who wants this to be enforced in this case. Its just usually the case that its the rights holder like film studios or music labels but in this case i could see amazon wanting it for themselves too.

one could argue that you not paid for that kind of usage and basically pirating in the sense that you use it without permission. It has probably even been denied explicitly to you to break the DRM too. In some countries its even illegal by default to circumvent digital protection measurements.

Just saying, you probably could directly pirate the books too. Putting your money where your rights are respected and you are given the freedom to read your books on any device you want is probably a better idea. Even if it is just to make them grow more.
