Admittedly I'm not an expert on 19th century Victorianism nor US politics, but this anecdote doesn't make me think any less of LLM's in the least, and I don't see why I should expect different behaviour than what you describe, especially on complex topics

Most likely culprits here for the discrepancy is which coffee you're using/freshness thereof, consistency of grind, and water quality (and second the JH recommendation)

As someone who programs without a CS undergrad background and always feels insecure about it, this sounds both very interesting and a very good deal.
