The NHK article you linked is about a death by shooting in Machida, and unrelated to this earthquake. There is an article about the earthquake from about four hours before that one was posted (https://www3.nhk.or.jp/shutoken-news/20230526/1000093005.htm...), though, and it doesn't mention deaths. That one was posted specifically in the section for Tokyo metro area (首都圏) news rather than national news, which does lend credence to the notion that fatality-less earthquakes don't garner much of a news cycle.

I'm currently testing an M1-based Air to see if I'd like to purchase something similar. I can confirm this for sure; the project files that made my current, not-even-old Windows laptop with similar stats choke are running like a dream even on this Air.

BTW, if you have a license for Live 11, version 11.1 forward has a Universal build, so it can run natively on M1 Macs rather than through Rosetta. [0]

For those who want to read the filing/follow along with the case but don't have access to PACER (which is where the docket link in the tweet leads), CourtListener's RECAP archive [0] has this case listed already [1], and a kind soul has already uploaded this particular filing [2]. Hopefully, as the case develops, people with PACER access will continue to buy and contribute the filings to RECAP.

Depending on your carrier, you could do this without swapping SIMs -- as far as I know, all of the Big Three in the US (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T) all have "number-sharing" programs normally reserved for things like smartwatches. In fact, Palm specifically advertises that they work with Verizon and T-Mobile, and proposes alternatives for other networks (https://palm.com/pages/companion). If you're serious about this, it sounds worth looking into!

Represented as the Minister proposes, it would be KONO Tarо̄. This relies on a bit of cultural knowledge; 太郎 (Tarо̄) is a very common first name for males in Japan.

The article is a smidge ironic, though; in this article about proposing a Last First standard, the Times refers to the promulgator via First Last. I suppose they're technically in keeping with current standards by using First Last, since the Minister's proposal is brand new.

I'm pretty sure IME updates take care of it just fine... when I woke up this morning and tried out Microsoft's Japanese IME after finding out the new era name, れいわ became 令和 on the first try - no messing around with the "misconversion" data necessary.

Despite that, Gboard's Japanese version hasn't caught up yet, but I imagine that'll be updated fairly quickly, either manually or OTA.

It appears so. My town already has an Aldi on one end of town, but they just bought up some land on the other side of town to open another one (much closer to the university campus). According to the PR around it, the US branch of Aldi is spending something like $5B to expand to 2500 stores (a quick Wikipedia search indicates that they have ~1900).

To an extent, those drawbacks can be mitigated by software, namely Calibre[0]. There may be alternatives out there, but this is the particular piece of software I use. I'll do my best to address your concerns here. (N.B. I don't develop this software, nor am I paid to advertise it; I just like it and want to demonstrate some of its features here)

While most books that I own are hard-copy, I have an old Kindle Touch from 2012 that I use fairly often. I've received a bunch of gifts in eBook form over the years, and want to be able to read them on my computer and other devices. Calibre natively supports getting eBooks to and from devices such as mine[1], and there's a plugin out there (not too hard to find, but I won't name it here just in case) that automatically strips DRM from files during the import-to-library process. Of course, you can also just import files from your computer, and it will de-DRM those as well. Calibre also has a built-in content server[2] that's pretty configurable and allows you to share with friends; it essentially whips up a website that lets you both read eBooks in browser and download them in whatever formats you have.

You can also have it convert between most eBook formats and more[3]; you can be as granular as you want during the conversion process, or just use a default profile that comes with the software.

Of course, you can also edit any format of eBook that you've imported into your library[4]. I haven't personally tried that feature, but it looks like you'd be able to manage diagrams.

I realize that this is a fair amount of work to do on the consumer side to address the problems you've brought up, but as a multi-device reader (computers big and small, Kindle, phone), it does a great job without much hassle for me.

Maybe so, but "certain", from a grammatical standpoint, implies that they know exactly which models are affected, which in turn implies that it is not the entirety of their printers that are affected. Maybe that's not the case, and every single printer they make is affected, but that's just my thought on it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Net neutrality isn't FTC's domain. FTC is the Federal TRADE Commission, which handles stuff like mergers of giant companies, the Do Not Call registry, and identity theft; the FCC, the Federal COMMUNICATIONS Commission, handles things like net neutrality, amateur radio licensing, and selling bands of spectrum.

Similar situation here... one of the core Racket dev team members (i.e. PLT) works here, and we use HtDP in our one-semester Intro to CS (211) class. They specifically advertise it to those who have little to no past programming experience, with the only prereq being high school precalc; it's pretty rigorous and definitely covers a lot of stuff that my past programming textbooks didn't at all (e.g. recursion out the wazoo, abstraction). Here, it sets up for our 212 class, Intro to Software Systems, which is another semester class, all done in Java and about OOP. Seems like a mildly jarring switch if you ask me.

Even with my past experience, I still needed a ton of help from professors and other students. It's kinda daunting to think about doing it alone, without much help.
