From one their talk the CTO hinted it was regular EBS.

But for many other database such as "Amazon DocumentDB" , "Time Series" humour suggest it's Dynamo.

> it just seems that almost every job out there is about squeezing more profit out of people

Yes you are right 100%.

Few years ago I tried to raise cash for a devtools startup

I met with lots of VC. It was a fascinating yet horrible experience.

VC were not even interested in discussing about the product itself. They just wanted the growth numbers...

They couldn't care less about the problem I was trying to solve.

Software industry and Startups has evolved a lot from two decades ago.

20 years ago startups were built to be disruptive and bring innovation to the mass.

Today they just apply the YC model on repeat until the founders can make their exit and move to another startup...

Most Founders these days are just in for for the money and the fame , they want to appear on "Forbes" ,"Washington Post" and escape the boredom of Entreprise. In reality they don't care about actually solving problems , R&D nor software at all.

I'm not gonna blame them , why make something actually great when something mediocre will make you rich and famous ?

I was fortunate enough to find a job in banking with remote work , I only work 5-10 hours / week with a very high salary.

My team is full of incredible people super funny who don't commit their personal life on a shitty job to pay their bill , nor try to turn two founders from Berkley from multi-millionaires to billionaires.

I've worked in startups with 300M in the bank , SME , Enterprise , I've done them all ! No one cares about software, trust me after 10 years of experience I can tell you that no one cares about software !

All modern startups care bout is money !

I can only recommend you to find a boring job in a fortune 500 thats lets you have a fulfilling private life , I've done this choice and I'never been much happier in my entire life !

The article is written by GraalVM Developer Advocate , it's not even written by Facebook technically.

I remember a contrat with Kong API Gateway , they offered generous deal if we agreed to sign an agreement to attend their conference to promote their product.

Very common in the industry to have those terms "legally binded".

> The housing supply argument doesn’t hold up to me

Strongly disagree with you , I'm in Europe. I'm in the 25% richest of my state , I can't manage to rent a home because every time I contact a landowner for a property to rent there is 30+ person who applied before me within 4 hours...

Covid-19 has created a "remote economy" boom as well as accelerated household project to move to another state and acquire a property or just to invest in real estate.

Thus real estate market is performing just as expected... As long as the supply does not meet the demand the price goes up.

For crypto it's different , 99% of crypto transactions are speculation base. It's by design.

Netflix is moving into European production because governements subsidies it. It's a pure commercial move , Netflix doesn't care at all about the respective culture of 20+ country of UE.

I'm From France , my country back movies with hundreds of millions of funding every year. New European laws are forcing governements to open those fundings to "Foreign Institutions", that's why they are making this move.

This law enable Netflix to make content much cheaper using public funding while using each country culture to improve customer retention.

As a French coming from African descent I'm absolutly terrified of what they are going to do with character like Napoleon or Charles de Gaulles...

Lupin show a clear tendency to override history fidelity toward a much more political narrative... It's frightening because they is literally THOUSANDS of story that do contain French coming from African Descent or Foreigners soldiers who decided to fought for France[0]

Seeing Big tech taking over everything with a political agenda is deeply saddening.

The developer is super smart , it's Bootstrap Studio[0] rebranded as something new.

I remember Michael Seibel talking about YC company "launching multiple times" because you shouldn't be stopping until you find your product market fit.

This time it's seems like the right shot , but the pricing is quite high for what is it...

Everything said above is true.

Supabase started Open Source , their GitHub repo had tutorials on how to host the platform yourself with a bit of documentation. Basically from what I understood they've been growing SO FAST ( they raise 10+$M IIRC ) they had to make a choice between "Growth" or "Integrity".

Obviously it's a YC company , the market they're going after is massive , they chose growth over integrity and doing things "that don't scale" but that have "traction".

I agree with the author , the founders should come clear about the marketing and the status of Self Hosting and Open Source... Supabase is no where near Open Source as it promised when it was published on HN few months ago... It's getting closer to a "MuleSoft/Serverless Inc" type of thing that lets you connect your own providers...

Don't get me wrong , I'm saying this because I'm an Enterprise Architect in one of the largest Bank in Europe , I desperately need an Open Source Firebase Clone to move 300+ Developers and Business Analyst into a Cloud First / Product Focus model away from legacy Cobol Enterprise App, Supabase seemed the ideal candidate.

Unfortunately it has been a huge deception.
