when I am on a kiteboarding forum I prefer to see ads that are relevant to kiteboarding and not ads for hand mixers just because I looked at or bought one last week.
I also think targeted ads are really bad for society in general. They have incentivized the building of companies that have created massive surveillance and manipulation systems on a scale nobody would have dreamt of some decades ago. Think about Stalin or Hitler having the datasets Google or Facebook have built up and how they could have used them. I can't see anything good about targeted advertising unless you buy into the vision that people's only purpose in life is to buy things.
A lot of people buy these three ton machines to feel "safe". In turn they don't feel the need to protect others from that machine. In my LA neighborhood I saw a lot of moms barreling through the neighborhood in their big SUVs with their kids while talking on the phone or texting. I have had several occasions where I had to jump out of the way to not getting run over. I don't think the drivers even noticed me.
when I had my motorcycle most near misses were also with SUV drivers not paying attention when changing lanes. The more expensive the SUV the more dangerous.
In Munich I almost ran over a drunk bicycle guy because he suddenly swerved into my lane.
I am ok with people killing themselves but it's not OK do something stupid that makes another person kill you. An example would be jumping in front of a train to commit suicide. These things leave deep trauma in the people this happened to. I view drunk cycling in that category.
"The second reason is that here, everyone is a cyclist. Going for groceries? Five minute bike ride, much easier and quicker than going by car. Kids cycle to school alone from a young age. Going out for drinks? Bike. Because everyone is a cyclist and there are cyclists everywhere, cyclists are equal participants in traffic and are treated with care and respect."
that's how I felt in Munich. Bikes were everywhere and drivers were used to them. In the US in most places bikes are rare so drivers (including me) stop looking for them.
How even is that warming you get from them? I find it very uncomfortable to sit outside at a restaurant where they have heaters. One side gets roasted and the other is cold.
I also found Blade Runner 2049 terrible. It felt totally empty. The original movie had an interesting story and built an interesting world. I don’t even know what 2049 was really about.
I felt the same about the “Joker” movie. Good acting and production but ultimately not interesting .
"Design docs take _much_ longer than you think. Code reviews take longer than you think also."
I work in medical devices and this is so true.
A thorough design doc or a thorough code review takes a very long time. It actually may take as much or more time as the actual coding. Somehow we never account for this time in planning so either things are rushed or the project will be delayed significantly. Add to that the fact we don't have good tools either for writing docs neither or for code reviews.
I don’t think there really is a need to get rid of Facebook completely if you use it for useful things. If you don’t do much there you don’t feed them any information and or contribute to toxic discussions.
I think “most” is a little exaggerated. Most people I know rarely post anything or when they do it’s actually useful. Same for Twitter. I don’t know anybody who posts a lot or gets into flame wars.
When people start whining about your salary expectations the first thing to do is to make them state their expectations. If they don’t give you a number that means they want to bully you by making you feel insecure. This is a disrespectful tactic and it’s almost guaranteed that working there will be an unhappy experience.
