Even if you limit it to the US, they have 56% which is only a very small majority. Are you trying to argue that that 44% of users not on iOS can’t message others because of that terrible Apple monopoly? Frankly, that’s just ridiculous and your fantasy case is so hopelessly going nowhere nobody is going to even start it.

If you only have friends that also have iOS devices, you can create an iMessage group and send messages in it. I don’t know how that works in the US but apparently it’s really popular.

You wonder how anyone survives in all of the world where nobody uses iMessage (which is everywhere except the US). How do people even manage to open WhatsApp? How do people survive this horror!

A case against a monopoly with a minority market share. Good luck with that!

Apple has a better solution with Continuity, if you are near your Mac there is an icon for the activity you are doing on the iPhone that you can click to continue it on the Mac. So you can just finish an email using the keyboard if you want.

That’s what Apple built and released and it’s easy to use and quite useful every once in a while.

You can be sure they also built and tried what you are proposing, but they found it just isn’t a great experience. Sounds great, doesn’t work.

Samsung actually released it, pretty much no one uses it. You can try it for yourself and you will also probably find it’s not as great as you’d imagine.

No wireless. Less space than a Nomad. Lame.

Of course the HackerNews hive mind can’t stand for this! But when someone pops up to complain about his essential social network account being banned on some flimsy pretext everyone agrees that that shouldn’t be legally possible!

Any unsigned OS perhaps but they could still run the signed operating systems they can now no longer run, like the Ubuntu releases.

> UEFI didn't kill the freedom to run any OS on your PC.

With the new Secure Boot rules this ‘goal’ is ever closer. By default, new computers must now only boot the Microsoft boot loader, which can only boot Windows.

In my opinion it’s just a matter of timing and sentiment; when Putin annexed Crimea nobody did anything.

Apart from your comment and its replies there’s only one other conversation containing the word ‘privacy’ and its about how people want to be able to use cash so the credit card company can’t see all of your purchases. Doesn’t sound too unreasonable to me (nor does that appear to me to be limiting you in any way) and I don’t quite understand why you didn’t reply to them instead of posting an apparently ‘opposite’ rant.

How do you go from ‘Apple is offering a new payment method’ to a rant about how you don’t care about privacy?

Why would people have to choose between using only cash and sharing their data with everyone? The normal thing to do is limit who can access the data as much as possible. And if people don’t do that, why would legislators care?

True, similarly I’ve always wondered whether DJ mixing tools directly decode the mp3s at the pitch they are going to play. No idea if that is practical though.

Where is the contradiction?

As far as the theory goes, the transform using the DCT is lossless apart from rounding errors. The quantization step just rounds more roughly. Which is where the lossy compression happens.

Basically you’re not removing the high frequencies because they carry little information, you remove the information they carry.

If you just remove the high frequency you end up with a blurred, smooth picture that doesn’t look like the original. But if you quantize the strength you get a pretty similar looking picture, apart from the degenerate case of sharp edges in a drawing.

There’s similar interfaces for Finder for things like Dropbox, except not every mouse driver has a plug-in and if it turns out the model is problematic, like on Windows, Apple has no issues with repairing it and forcing the plugins to update.

Backwards compatibility is nice but it drags you down.

Explorer hosts a million plugins for everything that wants to do things like add a menu entry to the desktop right click menu, and each of them can crash or hang Explorer.

It’s just a terrible design.
