Youtube's been acting weird on my end of late. I don't sign in, but allow cookies for YT to recommend me vids. Couple days ago I accidentally opened a YT vid while VPN on browser was on. Ever since then YT stopped recommending vids other than the most popular default ones that I believe YT shows everyone until their recommendation engine catches up with one's interests.
Yeah, you probably want to go the farthest distance from where you are currently. A speaker of an analytic language (say, Mandarin) would probably have their mind stretched maximally if they went for something agglutinative(say, Turkish) and vice versa. Geographic and cultural distance makes this even more of a mind expander.
I google a term of interest, then simply check out the related news for the past 24 hours. Don't really care about the source as I consider all news to be entertainment.
The following are posted on HN quite a bit (I find them the most entertaining):
NYT,The Guardian, BBC, Bloomberg, The WSJ, South China Morning Post, Financial Times, WaPo, The Diplomat, Foreign Affairs, Atlantic, Reuters, AP News, Radio Free Europe(google spits this one out when you search for Russia, Central Asia/Eastern Europe), The Hill etc
I come from former USSR as well. Let me tell you, Americans(Mississippians or not) are definitely more civilized than Europeans. Partly it has to do with religiosity and gun ownership. More Americans behave themselves for fear of Jesus' disapproval and/or bullets flying all over the place.

switching Invidious instance seems to fix the problem.
