If Tesla is using this to boost car sales, it will be limited to new models only. There are a lot of cheap used Teslas out there; if Carplay is added to them, Tesla both doesn't make any sales money and they won't make any services money for providing connectivity.
It's a bit of a trap. Retrofitting CarPlay is possible on all Teslas, it's not demanding on the infotainment hardware. Every Tesla owner will be aware of that.
