>It seems weird that this guy will try to promote his product to the Linux community and chooses to do it by insulting its user base.
Please don't act like you are a representative sample of all linux users. FOSS centric guys are vocal but distributions like Ubuntu became very popular in part because they included and automatically installed proprietary wifi and GPU drivers right from their installer CD.
That you feel insulted reading someone talk about "fundamentalist FOSS" doesn't mean every linux user feels insulted reading the sentence.
>Although having the good version of APOE doesn't mean you'll never get it, and having the bad version doesn't mean you're guaranteed to get it.
Well, having the bad version of the genes certainly doesn't guarantee anything if you don't live long enough too. Only 5% of all people who have the disease have developed symptoms before the age of 65 after all, while average life expectancy of men in the US is at 76. It's very well likely to be predisposed to diseases like these and not develop symptoms because something else killed you before it could show up.
>I wonder why wouldn't they just slap polish domain on it.
Customer service? They probably don't have any call center that speaks Polish. They won't slap a .country domain if they can't deliver something up to their standards and not just allow people to buy and then have to speak in English if there's any issue with the product or delivery.
When amazon really commits to a country they put a decent amount of effort into it. In France for example you can quickly get someone over the phone to deal with your issues and they speak French.
> perhaps taste(closely related), we have been unable to tame
Really? How do you think they make the most junk of food still palatable enough that people aren't literally barfing while eating, say, a pizza that doesn't even have real cheese but a mediocre imitation of it?
Or things like this :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethyl_methylphenylglycidate
used in various cheap industrial food products like ice creams and syrups. Entirely artificial and synthesized imitation of strawberry.
We have deciphered taste down to infinite combinations of various synthetic compounds to replicate, although not to perfection, pretty much any sort of taste, which is why there is a junk food epidemic. People wouldn't be able to gorge themselves onto the road of becoming morbidly obese if artificial flavourings were not up to a decent, although not gourmet-level, standard.
>I think there's a tendency at HN to be very protective of google
There's a tendency to be very protective of a wretched business model more than there is of google in itself. It may seem people come to google's defense a little too much on HN but that's only because google is the largest, most important corporation at the front of the business model that matters most to hners: advertisement and abusing user data. How else could any of the funded startups that provide free online services survive if they didn't get their money back through some other means?
There is a vested interest on HN and other similar places on the web to show solidarity toward any individual or corporation whose livelihood depends on this because the second you start questioning companies like Google and Facebook, you start questioning the very livelihood of everyone involved here.
