Am I the only one who sees this as something far too easily abused? I just signed up my brother (HNer/ programmer) for text alerts for imgur.com which is posted to reddit every minute.
Icons are the hieroglyphs of the 21st century. I can promise you that in a few thousand years if a human came across a functioning computer from the 21st century they would be truly confused by the funny little pictures all over the place. They would (WILL) most likely study our icons and try to understand our language.
I've been using prefetching on chrome for a few days now on a heavily trafficked image site, it appears to the user that clicking next is instant as the next image is already rendered.

Valleys are weekends and January tends to have the lowest valley, most likely due to winter break for and/or vacation time. If you were to measure the time spent on HN only on peaks you could get a rough estimate of the time spent not working, at work.
Google is clearly trying to push the world towards NFC, they are pushing to hard. QR has many applications that NFC won't be able to compete with. Googlers might be fine with rapid technological advancement however the average joe has just adapted to QR codes recently and most likely doesn't want to learn to use/implement a new technology. Android will help push the move from QR to NFC, but QR needs to be kept alive for a while still.

They are innovative with their marketplace and have many barriers to overcome. I'm not saying that their product is a good product. I'm saying that if more startups ran with the intensity of cocaine smugglers, never giving up even when the competition is more advance and instead developing innovative, fast and simple methods to beat the competition, that many of the tech startups today would succeed instead of failing at the first large hurdle.
Monetize it! Artwork, you already have the name of each piece. Large prints, it's the equivalent to half the art produced anyways, plus it has some meaning to it.
To be honest, after failing the first time I knew I had to pass, so I CTR + Tab'd to this backup HN tab and wrote this comment as the soothing ocean noises on the other tab calmed me.
Google has advertising all wrong with AdWords, they constantly encourage ad spamming of low value ads, with little relativity to extremely large groups. With the huge amounts of data Google as collected over the years, you would think that they would have created a more efficient advertising platform, where a 6% click through isn't considered to high, where 6% is considered to low. AdWords was, without a doubt, a great business move.... at the time. Times change, I don't see why we have to be bombarded with 1000's of irrelevant ads a day. If I were to see only ONE advert a day, and that ONE advert was for something I was truly interested in, then billions of dollars in useless advertising could be spent on bettering a product. Maybe it's time for conventional advertising to die, imagine clean websites with no ugly, annoying pop ups, scroll overs or sound ads. It's just an idea, highly unlikely to happen, yet it would create a simpler cleaner internet, while cutting down on global advertising spending and driving up conversion rates.
I agree with that, I still use traditional email which supports a far more professional communication. As for socializing all my close friends can call me. I found that I had far to many people on facebook who I hadn't ever had a valuable conversation with. In my opinion facebook doesn't have the balance right, email is to personal, facebook is in my opinion trying to push the "more friends are better" on us to hard.

Very true, Forbes often overlooks the women behind innovation. They tried to make up for it with the 100 most influential women issue last month, I would much rather see them include a few more articles each month on the subject.

I'm new to HN and I wouldn't post my startup link, as I've yet to contribute enough to the community to earn the time other members would need to review my startup. That being said, I do believe that a karma threshold for RMS posts would be a valuable asset to HN.
One thing you will learn is that it's drive that pays off. If you feel like quiting in the bad times during startup you're going to have a hard time when your company runs into hard times in the future once you've invested more into it. Look at the guys form airbnb, they lived of cereal and were broke but they never lost hope. Like bradly said find some like minded roommates. Also congrats on having investors contact you, thats a good sign. Keep it up.
With the ease of learning due to the unlimited resources we have these days more and more people are labeling themselves "techies" and running Linux. I think Linux will gain some ground as more people run it with the notion that it will make them a better programmer, when the reality is that they will still work a day job at Futureshop for the next 10 years (that is if large tech stores exist in 10 years).
